Red Robin suit revamp challenge

Challenge: translate classic men’s suits into high fashion looks

As the winner of the prior challenge, Sandhya picked the first suit and got to choose suits for every designer. Mitchell complained about the blue leisure suit. Sean got a difficult brown corduroy suit and Hernan thinks that Sandhya thinks he’s a threat and picked a terrible suit for him intentionally. I think Sandhya honestly tried to pick what she thought suited the designers with what she had to work from. She’s honest and big-hearted.

hernan

So Hernan bought vinyl to work with because that always makes things easy. Mitchell ended up putting his material inside a clear material for a cool-looking effect. It was just too short. When the models tell the designer the outfit’s too short, it’s WAY too short. He was safe.

Sandhya chose a yellow and purple suit and ended up with a cute bright outfit. she was safe.

As the designers walk out to the runway to hear about the latest challenge, there are Marie Claire covers all over the walls. Amanda gushes: “Marie Claire covers with the original supermodels. This is so up my alley. [Project Runway cliché.] I am thrilled.”

Executive-in-Chief of Marie Claire, Anne Fulenwider is a guest judge along with Undone host Amanda deCadenet. It’s Marie Claire’s 20th anniversary. The magazine hit shelves in 1994. Heidi had just arrived in New York as a 21-year-old model. Tim already had been teaching at Parsons for 12 years. Nina worked as a production assistant in the garment district. And cutie-pie Zac was 14 years old and “probably wearing vests over t-shirts.”

The challenge: design for Marie Claire 2034. Or “what the future of fashion looks like through your design aesthetic,” says Tim.

Tim

Nothing terribly exciting going on except that per usual no one liked Sandhya’s design or could even figure out what she was doing. I’ve yet to have issue with Sandhya and her work. Alexander said what everyone thought: “I’m confused by Sandhya.” Sandhya is this season’s Patricia [S11]. When Alexander’s model came in for the fitting, the bust didn’t fit properly. Doesn’t he have her measurements?

Tim to Christine: “Tomorrow on the runway exude unconditional confidence.” This sounds like a fantastic inspirational mantra.

Project Runway S12.Ep14 Finale Part 2: RECAP

Dom, Bradon, Justin and Alexandria will be showing their collections at New York Fashion Week but it’s not Project Runway without another challenge. They must replace a current design with a “washable fabric” for the TIDE PODS WASHABLE LOOKS CHALLENGE. Enough with the sponsors Project Runway!

Bradon

prs12_09062013_bn-0105

“My collection is weird in a great way. It’s mixing fabrics that people would not think to put together.”
Dom thinks Bradon’s collection looks old.

Dom

prs12_09062013_bn-0165

Tim thinks one of her designs might look “janky.” He says it’s all about “silhouette, proportion and fit.”
Bradon thinks Dom’s collection looks great and is surprised that Tim’s so tough in his critique.
Justin thinks Dom’s his biggest competition.

Justin

prs12_09062013_bn-0153

Making a reversible look for the Tide look.
Alexandria likes Justin’s 3D accessories but wonders if that’s the highlight of his collection.

Alexandria

prs12_09062013_bn-0063

Making a washable silk pant for the Tide look. She’s “scared.”
Tim: “You need to do something to make these looks command more attention so they’re not 10 monotonous looks.”

Tim brings everyone in for a gather around. “What I really love about going into tomorrow is it’s anyone’s game. I love you. Make it work.”

Runway Show

The next day, they arrive at Lincoln Center and freak out about the runway and then start freaking out in their own ways backstage. Dom remains pretty calm and since the second episode I’ve remained confident in her talent and abilities as a designer and in her overall personality and demeanor. Alexandria’s being “neurotic” according to Dom. Tim give Justin the news that one of his models broke her ankle so he gets a replacement model who doesn’t fit the garment and it’s too late for him to make the proper adjustments. Bradon tells his models to move away with their food and drinks. “They’re way too close to my clothes.” And sure enough, a model poured coffee down the front of a blue charmeuse gown.

Justin

based on being deaf and hearing for the first time when I was 18
Justin didn’t have any colors and Nina Garcia didn’t give him a hard time. He used white, black and gray.

Dom is my absolute favorite and has been from episode TWO.

prs12_09062013_pk-0513_r

Heidi Klum: “This was a great show today. But as you know only one winner of Project Runway.”

Zac Posen: “I feel like I’ve been on a whole journey with you. You all presented very strong different points of view and they shined.”

Nina Garcia: “Thank you for sharing all your talents and efforts with us.”

Kerry Washington: “Today, to be able to celebrate new designers and to witness your work out there for the first time was a real honor.”

Justin

Zac Posen: “I think you presented a beautiful collection. I commend you for working with 3D printing. The shapes have a balance of ease and they’re feminine.”

Kerry Washington: “I was thrilled toward the end when there were some sheer fabrics because I loved that there was more diversity. I loved the sound waves dress.”

Heidi Klum: “Your collection was very polished. It was very cohesive.”

Nina Garcia: “I saw many different shapes from you. There’s a gentle architecture to your work. I wish I saw two more outfits that had a wow factor.”

Bradon

Zac Posen: “I loved your inspiration.”

Kerry Washington: “It was masterful the shaping and the draping of it (the first piece).”

Heidi Klum: “another favorite of mine is the unconventional material dress. That is a cool dress.”

Nina Garcia: “For me it was a surprise for you to be not-focused. To me you have too much going on. People who don’t know you, don’t know the story.”

Dom

Nina Garcia: “I thought this was an extremely entertaining show. Without any words you told the story. That’s a good show. You really pushed yourself.”

Kerry Washington: “I’m impressed that you do the prints yourself. They’re modern but very tribal but also architectural. They’re very unique.”

Zac Posen: “The one weak outfit was the bathing suit look.”

Alexandria

Heidi Klum: “I really like your collection. It looks very young. It looks very hip. It looks very now.”

Zac Posen: “I thought it was a really successful runway show. Your woman has that spice and attitude and that strength but she’s also vulnerable. That’s a really nice niche juxtaposition that you’re playing with.”

Nina Garcia: “Your show was styled very well. It was very editorial. It was very effortless.”

Kerry Washington: “it was exciting for me.”

prs12_09062013_bn-0396_r

Heidi asks why they should win Project Runway.

Justin: “I cannot count how many times I’ve been walked over because I’m deaf and it’s to show the people it’s possible. And I’d just point out one thing. I haven’t won one challenge this season and I’d like to win this challenge.”
The only designer not to cry.

Dom: “I just feel it in my soul this is what I need to be doing for the rest of my life. This is more than I need the money. This is my life. I can turn it into something spectacular. You’ve seen my message. I would really like the opportunity to bring more of that to the table.”

Bradon: “I danced for 30 years and I was so scared that I would never have anything else I would like that about in a career and in less than three years I found it in fashion. If I take nothing else away from this show, that will propel me for the rest of my life.”

Alexandria: “I’m bankable. I understand what girls want to wear. I sacrificed everything and I work hard. I work all day and all day. I sacrifice everything because I love what I do. It’s like air. It’s like breathing. I want it. It’s my turn.”

Heidi to Justin: “We loved your collection. You took a very personal inspiration and turned out very unique clothes and accessories.”

Heidi to Alexandria: “So many women would love to wear your collection including us. Your collection was cool and cohesive.”

Heidi to Dom: “You took a huge risk and it worked. Your collection was really fresh, original and playful.”

Heidi to Bradon: “You have won many challenges throughout this season. You have shown us some stunning pieces. And as usual they were meticulous. We did feel like the collection was not as cohesive or as focused as it should’ve been.”

4th place: Bradon
3rd place: Justin
2nd place: Alexandria

Project Runway S12.Ep13 finale part one: RECAP

prs12_08302013_bn-0078

Between the sponsored design challenges and lackluster designers, Project Runway has less pizazz than in earlier seasons. I barely remember who won the past few seasons and can’t recall that many designers that really stood out. In a few weeks there’s another Project Runway All-Stars and looking at the list of designers, I only recognized three and I’m almost positive I only missed the first season and *maybe* one other. I’ve liked Dom since episode two and wanted her in the final three and that’s happening. Of course for the final spot, as with the past few seasons, Heidi decided that the judges would make the designers complete collections and then show the judges three looks on the runway. One designer would advance to New York Fashion Week [NYFW].

The remaining designers need to create a 10-look collection for Spring.

$9000 budget and one look designed with unconventional materials. They have six weeks to design their collections.

prs12_08312013_bn-0029

Bradon and Dom are designing for NYFW.

Alexandria, Justin and Helen must compete to show at NYFW.

Tim Gunn visits everyone at home to see how they’re progressing.

Dom in Philadelphia
–raised by single mom and her mom runs a restaurant
–inspired by Blade Runner and retrofuturism, angular lines meeting curved lines
–did some drawings and prints with watercolors and made prints
–Mending braces for doors for unconventional piece
–only 3 ½ looks completed
–Dom’s drawings are gorgeous and her concept’s great.

Bradon in Los Angeles
–inspiration growing up in New York state with crocuses poking up through the snow and springtime “clash of nature”
–he’s completed six pieces
–Seeing lots of floral dresses. Unsure what to think and not inspired by his inspirations.

prs12_08312013_bn-0013

Alexandria in San Mateo, Calif
–edgy, strong and modern “neo-romantic-punk”
–she says it’s “understated but detail oriented”
–she takes Tim to Camp Couture. Not sure if it’s sweat shop training or what it’s supposed to be. the kids are cute and look pretty happy.
–I like the idea for her collection but it’s all in black, beige, gray and white.

prs12_09012013_bn-0008

Helen in Unionville, NJ
–inspiration is clairvoyance—knowing the unknown—took a photograph of an eye
–using red and some print
–Tim says: “you need to do something that speaks to some innovation”
–Not liking her color palette. The entire collection’s red and a blue print. That never works.

Back in New York when talking to Tim, Helen kept saying how long she worked on something and how hard she worked. “I spend hours on this.” As soon as she talked that way which she’s been doing the entire show I knew she wasn’t making it to New York Fashion Week. Although she’s been a good designer and had won some challenges she’s insecure about her designs and can’t push herself enough. Her vision isn’t clear enough on its own. She needs more time.

prs12_08312013_bn-0059

Justin in Raleigh, NC
–inspired by sound waves and the story of before and after he got his cochlear implants.
–for unconventional he’s using test tubes and covering a garment with them
–Seems pretty cool.

“I am so happy that Tim Gunn used his save on you and brought you back. I thought it was very fashion forward. Your clothes are very fashion-forward.” –Heidi Klum

“Your first look is very chic. You finale is a wow piece. The 3-D printing is so cool. It’s a great resource in technology.” –Zac Posen

“There’s something very poetic about your designs.” –Nina Garcia

As far as a theme, Justin’s collection has it. And the story’s inspirational and intriguing. His test tube dress looks totally cool.

Alexandria

“Your clothes are fashion-forward. There’s so much detail. I want to have all of this.” –Heidi

“It has a luxe quality to it. The detailing looks very professional.” –Zac Posen

“When it walked out I knew immediately it was you. I fear this is going to look boring. I don’t know if these clothes are show-worthy clothes.” –Nina Garcia

When the judges were discussing the three designers later, Heidi said “poor thing she thinks gray, beige and white are colors.” Very funny.

Helen

“I love this minimal yet feminine silhouette that your clothes have.” –Nina Garcia

“You get modern women. The last dress looks like a concept that didn’t come to fruition.” –Zac Posen

“I’m so not happy with what you did today. They’re stuck and they look sad to me.” –Heidi Klum

Justin is IN. Not surprised at all. Alexandria is IN. Both showing at NYFW.

Helen is OUT.

prs12_07092013_bn-0015

Challenge: create an avant-garde look inspired by butterflies

prs12_07092013_bn-0080

Dom
–Crossbreeding textiles as the butterflies crossbreed
–Jumpsuit underneath another style
Tim: “what do the judges like most from you?”

prs12_07092013_bn-0037

Helen
–Cape with only her face exposed. A big wrapping, cocoon-like. Then she has this orange dress.
Tim says it’s too much. She starts crying and freaking out.
Tim: “I’m going to give you some tough love. Get out of this conundrum. Rally. Rally.”

Alexandria
–Unfinished silk effect black dress.
Tim: “It’s on the Goth side. I’m a fan.”

prs12_07092013_bn-0097

Bradon
“My idea is that the back becomes gown-like.”
Tim: “Well, the back’s spectacular. I love it as a piece of sculpture.”

prs12_07092013_bn-0112

Justin
–Making a two piece garment with piping
Tim thinks the textile looks inexpensive so Justin might swap out to another fabric.

They’ll work on the models make-up with Billy B, consulting make-up artist for L’Oreal Paris and also Tom, global nail expert for L’Oreal Paris.

After working on avant garde designs, the next day the designers come in and have to make a transformation look. They choose a losing design and have to transform the look.

“Make it Work” Challenge: create a new look from a losing look from an eliminating designer

Bradon picks Sue’s losing look
Justin picks his own losing look—strapless gown with two slits
Dom picks Jeremy’s red jacket and skirt

HP INTEL textile challenge- create a print inspired by a NEXT GEN innovator

–each designer meets with a young innovator to serve as a muse for the designs as “core inspiration” for the textile design

prs12_07062013_bn-0097

“I don’t have to run around Mood looking for a print this time, I can just make it.” –Dom

Only seven designers left:
Alexander
Bradon
Justin
Dom
Helen
Kate
Alexandria

Justin—Nana Meriweather (Miss USA)– non-profits to educate children around the world

KATE—Maria “Girls Who Code”- app- say something- is a software developer—Kate wants to design “binary code” in the textile

Bradon—Nigel-prof BMX biker and also entrepreneur and youth mentor— Bradon envisions “city scape” in textile

Alexandria—Ilana is a chef— Alexandria feels “drawn to brick walls”

Dom—Premal, founder of Kiva, crowd funding loans for business ideas/entrepreneurs- “I’m so inspired by how many people this has reached and I’m excited to translate so many people from so many places into my textile.”

Helen—Ryan—artist, combines new media and technology, Helen’s nervous because she’s never worked w/ textiles but both her parents are artists so she feels a connection with Ryan.

prs12_07062013_bn-0003

Alexander—Thiago—pastry chef at Catch, named Zagat’s 30 under 30—Alexander says: “Honestly, I’m not that inspired by cakes. I don’t do cake-like things.”

Tim’s critiques

Dom
Tim: “I am crazy about this print.”
Dom: “Making a basic body column dress. I don’t know if it’s too much color.”
–I love her print. I love the sketch for the dress and what it looks like she’s doing.

Bradon
Intends to make a jacket and long skirt
Tim: “I am so perplexed by this. I don’t get it.”
After Tim leaves, Bradon decides to rework everything and scrap the long skirt idea. He makes a bomber jacket instead.

prs12_07072013_bn-0003

Kate
Dress with a blouse under it. “Gussets with a starburst pleat.”
Tim: “Just move forward.”

Justin
Making a gown
Tim: “Keep the curves going.”

Helen
Having doubts. “I don’t do prints. I’m freaking out. I don’t know what to do.”
Tim: “A challenge has come along where you’re not in your comfort zone but you have to make it work.” He gives her a hug and moves along.

Alexandria
Making an A-line mini skirt and some sort of top or vest
Tim: “Either all the work goes into the top or vest. It can’t go into both.”

Alexander
Tim: “It’s looking very clerical.”
Alexander: “Tim doesn’t really understand it but I’m not going to change it. This is me.”

Tim: “Most of you are over-thinking it. Don’t. Go with your viscera. That’s why it’s there.” Ah, okay. I realize that much of this gets edited so we don’t know what the designers truly make until it gets to the runway show.

prs12_06292013_bn-0249_r

Heidi tells the designers they’re getting the morning off for a Southern-style brunch at Juliette. During brunch, Tim arrives to inform them of the latest challenge. It’s for the southern woman. He reminds them that Southern women love bright colors and dresses vibrantly and expressively. She likes feminine details and uses accessories.

Belk Challenge: Create a day or evening look for the modern, Southern woman.

**Winning look will be sold at Belk and at Belk.com

at Moods:
Helen gets yellow with a lace layering—“sunflower dress”
Dom gets a lovely black and white fine zebra print
Kate gets a pretty print for dress
Alexander has plaid silk charmeuse
Bradon also chooses plaid fabric
Alexandria has a blue plaid fabric
Ken is using a deep purple
Justin has orange and black

Tim critiques

Alexander—building a bodice, cocktail dress
Bradon—“I love this textile,” Tim says. Bradon’s worried that it’s a bit too 50s
Justin—Tim worries it looks too Halloweenish with his color combos
Jeremy—“excited to be working on a tailored jacket” in red. Dress underneath in a print that’s long and fitted and mid-calf
Ken—Tim seems happy with what he’s doing and most designers think that he’s the biggest threat
Helen—“inspiration was fresh and outdoors”
Dom—“designed a basic maxi” and Tim asks if it’s under-designed
Alexandria—“it’s reading very Bohemian-like,” Tim says.

BRADON is the WINNER of the challenge.

Bottom three designers have one hour to re-design their outfits or start off and show the judges a more modern look. They can work with one other designer. Jeremy works with Alexander. Ken chooses Kate because she can sew quickly and she “knows how things work.” Dom picks Helen because she’s the “only one she trusts.”

Here’s what they end up with:

The judges ADORE Dom’s rework. Tom from Belk is SO impressed that he decides that he wants to reproduce her look for Belk stores and online.

Kate: “I’m inspired by my little brother because he likes motocross racing.”

Helen: “I wanted to create a three-piece look.” She’s designing a jacket, tee and pants.

Karen: “I’m drawn to geometrical lines and designs.”

Back in the workroom, Helen asked Tim a question about whether she could use the pieces as reference to mock-up their own designs. Ken then asked Helen what he asked Tim. She said she wasn’t going to tell anyone. Ken of course went off and gave her a bunch of attitude and flipped out big time. Helen felt that he was threatening her. She then told Tim what happened so that Tim and the producers would be aware. Ken called his mom and then spoke to his spiritual advisor. Tim then pulled him aside to talk calmly to him. “I’m your ally,” Tim told Ken. “I’ve been frustrated all day and I flipped out on you for no reason and I like you,” Ken told Helen.

Justin– “I’m very intimidated” with Heidi doing the critique

Karen–Idea of sports bra with style lines
Heidi: “it is impossible. It is Martian it is crazy. I don’t see anyone wanting to have this. It looks trashy. You have to think more elegant.”

Project Runway S12.Ep7: RECAP

prs12_06232013_bn-0001

Marie Claire Challenge: Create a look inspired by a pair of shoes

Kate reminds us and the other designers that she was previously eliminated during the seventh challenge in her prior season. The designers gather at Marie Claire office in the wardrobe closet surrounded by shoes. The designers then choose shoes after answering fashion history questions. I actually knew the answer to the question: What designer created the essential little black dress? Coco Chanel of course!

Suggested budget: $250

prs12_06232013_bn-0112

Alexander and Miranda both choose plaid material. And they’re both making pants.

Alexandria—Gladiator shoes that had straps wrapped all the way up to mid-thigh. playful. “Making a statement piece without the bondage.”

Justin—multi-colored pump. Wants to make three piece outfit.

Miranda–Red patent leather flats. High-waisted pant and blouse, jacket. Tim: “fabric looks inexpensive.”

Alexander– off white platforms. was concerned about plaid pants due to Miranda but Tim said as long as he distinguishes his design.

Ken—black heel with open ties in front. Making a coat dress and it’s ballooning out in the bottom. Tim: “it’s looking dated. Don’t over design it.”

Bradon– sparkly flat and designed a champagne silky dress with a special French ruffling technique but Tim’s not all that impressed because he wonders where she’s going. “Don’t you think she’s going in it?”

Kate– interesting red patent platform. “I want to play up the surrealism of the shoe.” She’s making pants.

Jeremy– boots. Designing a chiffon sweater.

Dom– skater girl quilter dress with multi-colored creeper shoes.

Karen– beige and yellow pump. She’s designed a yellow and black dress. Tim: “Are you concerned about the matchy-matchy?”

prs12_06232013_bn-0129

Helen: Shoe with a studded toe. loads of applique. “Heavy and deluding into nothing.” Tim says that he sees Kate Middleton but with everything added he sees her mother.

Before the runway, Ken says: “I don’t care for Miranda’s look at all. It looked like Amy Winehouse after she OD’ed.” Alexander had to sew his pants onto the model. Bradon’s really rushing with the look. Kate thinks Bradon designed way too mature a look.
