Project Runway S13 Finale Part 2 RECAP
Posted by Amy Steele in TV, Visual/ Performance Art on October 25, 2014
Sean Kelly wins Project Runway S13
It’s probably not that surprising that a young designer won Project Runway as editing either makes it really obvious who’s out or obvious who’s in. Sean won a few, lost a few, struggled at the beginning, won when it counted and is young and cute. I’d hoped that Amanda Valentine would win if only to outshine her Maroon 5 brother for once but I guess she’ll always be the less popular sibling. Also she really had the best reason for wanting to win Project Runway. She said she wanted to be a brand. a big brand.
Sean, the 25-year-old designer from New Zealand, beat out 15 fellow designers. Currently residing in Brooklyn, Sean garnered attention this season with a dress chosen by Emmy Award-winning host Heidi Klum to wear at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys. Sean impressed judges Klum, Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and finale guest judge Emmy Rossum (Shameless) with his 10 piece winning collection inspired by the “Betrayal of Caesar” at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at New York City’s Lincoln Center this Fall.
Sean wins:
–$100,000 from Red Robin to launch his business and the opportunity to design a fashion accessory for their servers
–complete sewing and crafting studio from Brother International Corporation
–premiere entertainment center, courtesy of Samsung [so he can watch future episodes of Project Runway, Project Runway: All Stars and Project Runway: Threads]
— fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine
— car from Lexus
–entire year’s worth of Mary Kay beauty products for his fashion shows and professional makeup artist services for his debut show
–shoe and accessory collection from ALDO to help enhance his upcoming runway shows
— Best Western International will also provide Kelly with travel and hotel accommodations to fashion capitals and inspiring locations around the world
— Kelly’s winning model, Alisar Ailabouni will also appear in the winner’s fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine
Runner-up Amanda Valentine
Third place Kini Zamora
Fourth place Charketa Glover
Charketa
“You showed some really beautifully cut clothing . . . like a cool Solange Knowles. Now you’ll have to bring up the fashion game a little bit.” –Zac Posen

“It was exciting to see someone who was a Tim Gunn save make ti to fashion week.” Emmy Rossum
Amanda
“The problem is you’re trying too hard to be something you’re not.” –Heidi Klum
“I think our jewelry is ready to go. This was the most original collection on the runway.” –Zac Posen

Sean
This is probably the most editorial of the collections. It’s very polished.” –Nina Garcia

Project Runway S13.finale part one RECAP

The designers have a $9000 budget to make collections for New York Fashion Week in a five week period. They travel with Tim Gunn to Rome for inspiration.
“I believe in you so much and in your voice and I think in the finale we’re going to hear an orchestra from you.” Tim to Charketa when she asked why he used his save on her.
Sean is completely “blank” and has “no idea where he’s going.” He said he has a lot of costs to set up when he gets home. He doesn’t have a studio to work in.
Tim takes them to a fabric store in Rome. Sean and Kini don’t buy anything. Amanda wants to take fabric home. So she buys an expensive brown fabric. Charketa buys a pretty print.
Tim Gunn checks on everyone’s progress.
[note: Lifetime didn’t provide press with hometown pictures.]
Hawaii for Kini:
Inspiration: Park Avenue girl going to Rome
Lots of black and white.
Tim: “it’s 1000% you and I couldn’t be happier.”
Kini’s name in Hawaiian means the King of the morning star
Detroit for Charketa
“In Rome, there’s smaller of everything. You can do a lot with a little. I wanted to apply that to my designs.” –Charketa
Chose Detroit river front to meet Tim because it’s symbolic of Detroit and about a comeback.
“color I definitely went with color,” she gushes. Spent 1000 dollars on fabric in Rome.
Nashville for Amanda
Inspiration: Rome pics. Art deco. 60s and 70s weird bridge between Bohemian and mod.
Amanda doesn’t have anything completed yet.
Tim: “I have a positive response but you don’t want to have too much going on. You need to rake out all that extra stuff.”
“This time around I think my chances are as good as everyone else’s.” –Amanda
Brooklyn for Sean
Inspiration: Story from Rome is the betrayal of Caesar.
Sean: “My biggest fear is that they’ll say they’ve seen it.”
Tim: “You really have two collections here. There’s such a strong spirit of innovation with the fringe.”
The designers reconvene in New York.
Kini: “we’re a cool bunch and we’re going to have fun the rest of the time we’re here. But it’s still a competition.”
Charketa: “I feel like mine is very much outside the box.”
Kini: “I don’t feel like Char is on the same level as me. I think she has a lot to learn.”
The designers preview three pieces of their final collection.
“We really enjoyed watching the show.” –Heidi Klum
“I’m really proud of all of you. What a journey.” –Zac Posen
Sean
“It feels fresh and modern and young.” –Heidi Klum
“This is exciting. You took something signature like fringe and made it into a separate with a crisp white shirt. I wouldn’t change the styling. I think this is very good work.” –Zac Posen
“I do worry. Is your entire collection fringe?” –Nina Garcia
Charketa
“I do like the looks. I just don’t see how they all tie in. It’s not very cohesive for me.” –Heidi Klum
“[You have] great attitude and great personal style. I want to see more of that.” –Nina Garcia
“You’re a little bit eccentric. Take them to that place.” –Zac Posen
Amanda
“Do you have more of this jewelry? Put it on. It’s exceptional.” –Zac Posen
“I love that your clothes have an ease to them. I see a lot of girls wanting to have these clothes.” –Heidi Klum
“Get out of the it’s long, it’s bohemian. I think you’re ready to elevate your clothes to another level.” –Nina Garcia
Kini
“Right now to me this looks very old lady. I think you’re much better than this.” –Heidi Klum “I think you have to re-style this. I think you have to step away and think how I am going ot make this more modern.”
“To me the coat needs to go. As much as I see the technical prowess of it.” –Zac Posen
“There is no sex appeal going on here.” –Nina Garcia
“She’s not cool, she’s not sexy and she’s not edgy.” –Zac Posen

LEXUS (sponsored) Challenge: create a street chic look that is inspired by NYC
Five designers left—Amanda, Charketa, Emily, Sean and Kini. three or more will be going to New York Fashion Week. It’s a two-day challenge with a $200 budget.
“With Korina being gone, everybody’s having fun and just relaxing,” Kini notes. “There’s not that tense feeling anymore.”
Amanda, inspired by graffiti and color, is designing a maxi dress.
Charketa, inspired by a window display, plans to make a skirt with petals.
Emily wants to design a big hoodie.
Sean saw a guy in a caftan and all-white on the street and wanted to use the clean look of white. He’s doing a high-waisted pant and a “play on” a baseball shirt.
Kini is designing a pencil skirt and trench coat.
Of course being Project Runway, on the second day the designers arrive to see five losing looks. Tim arrives with the button bag.
Second challenge: losing look redux challenge. Take a losing look and re-design it into a winning look. No need to connect it to the other design.
Amanda chooses Fade’s design. Charketa takes Korina’s design because it has a lot of fabric. Emily takes Stephanie’s dress. Kini chooses Mitchell’s red dress. Sean ends up with Sandhya’s pink kid’s outfit.
“I think of doing a structural gown but it’s definitely not a color I would choose,” Sean says.
“We’re SO close to fashion week,” Amanda notes.
The designers of the losing looks are brought back to be assistants. Korina is pissed and rolling her eyes as soon as she walks in. When she realizes she’s with Charketa she is super annoyed.
“As soon as Korina walks in it’s like a black cloud,” Charketa notes.
“Korina has the body language that tells the rest of the world to F- off. She is arms crossed, sour-faced. Korina looks pissed,” Sean says.
Korina tells Tim she can’t be there. That she doesn’t want to be there. “It’s very fresh and I’m really upset still,” Korina says. “I wouldn’t be of any help. It’s clear I shouldn’t be here.” Alexander is brought back to help Charketa.
Amanda notes: “Getting eliminated sucks for everyone. It’s not any more painful for her.”
Potential foreshadowing or obvious foreshadowing. Emily: “I’m so into my street look I’m not thinking about the redesign.”
Sandhya is so sweet that she thanks Sean for choosing her design. He tells her it was the only one left.
Tim doesn’t like what Sean’s doing at all. He doesn’t like the “hospital” blue or the pants or the cheap look of the white fabric.
He tells Char that she’s got a lot going on with her skirt and maybe doesn’t need the pocket. “I’d rather you be in a position where you have to pull back then ramp up,” he says.
He’s unimpressed with Kini’s look. He thinks there’s not enough there. “Can’t we go to Michael Kors and buy this? Where is your signature?
Runway Judging
KINI
“I have mixed feelings. I do like the trench coat but I don’t like what’s underneath.” –Heidi Klum “The gown is so beautiful.”
“Less is more but it’s too much together.” –Nina Garcia
On the gown, Nina says: “It’s the right color. It accents all the right body parts.”
EMILY
“I don’t mind your street style look but I don’t know if it was the best thing to do on an important day like today.” –Heidi Klum
“To me this oversize hoodie felt homeless and it really freaked me out.” –Zac Posen
On her second look, Zac noted: “There’s not much to talk about.”
“Emily you seem to have a very definite point of view and I am disappointed I didn’t see it with the do-over.” –Nina Garcia
AMANDA
“Your street chic looks amazing. I loved it. It’s you.” –Nina Garcia
“I love your street style. It’s Bohemian-chic. I love the colors you’ve chosen.” –Heidi Klum
CHARKETA
“You have a nice eye for color. However it needs to look effortless. You have a lot on that skirt.” –Nina Garcia
“You have great ideas they just don’t execute out well.” –Zac Posen
SEAN
“What is going on here. It’s fantastic! This is spectacular. The cut of the skirt is very unusual.” –Heidi Klum
“It’s probably one of the best pieces I’ve seen on Project Runway.” –Nina Garcia
“It looks original and I was blown away.” –Zac Posen
Amanda, Charketa, Kini and Sean are going to New York Fashion Week.
Emily is out. I liked Emily. I really liked what she herself is wearing at the Runway show.

“I don’t think our looks were equal enough to be a tie-breaker,” Korina laments. “I’m so much of a better designer—she’s already been eliminated.”
They’re working for the hour with their teammates and Emily can’t stand all Korina’s complaining about Charketa.
“The comments that she makes mek me not want to help her and then her model starts chiming in as well,” Emily said. “This is really bad energy. The resentfulness that Korina is feeling, it’s gonna show in her dress.”

Challenge: American Girl dolls challenge. Designers paired with Be Forever character to design childrens clothing inspired by the doll and the doll’s story.
Working with children intimidates a few people. Emily has a children’s clothing line.
“I’m never around children I don’t have children so I’m not great with communicating with them.” –Korina
“I have no reference. Kids are weird . . . shape.” –Sean
Sandhya’s struggling with her unpopularity and other designers questioning her design aesthetic and abilities. At one point at Mood, she interrupts Korina who is being helped with fabric cutting. Korina says Sandhya doesn’t care about anyone else. But they only have 30 minutes in Mood so who knows the best approach. If you aren’t aggressive you fall behind on the show but if you’re too aggressive as a woman you’re viewing poorly.
“I have a super thick skin and it’ll take a lot to break me.” –Sandhya
Later back at the dorms, Sandhya cries. She tells Emily: “All of us have worked really hard to be here. To be who we are and I just expect a little respect for who I am.”
Last week Fade had a meltdown and was out. This week it’s Sandhya.

Kini notes that after three times being in the top “It’s time to win.”
Tim is dubious [a favorite Tim Gunn word] about Sandhya’s multi-color striped jumpsuit. “You need some counterpoint to this very colorful jumpsuit,” Tim tells her.

Challenge: translate classic men’s suits into high fashion looks
As the winner of the prior challenge, Sandhya picked the first suit and got to choose suits for every designer. Mitchell complained about the blue leisure suit. Sean got a difficult brown corduroy suit and Hernan thinks that Sandhya thinks he’s a threat and picked a terrible suit for him intentionally. I think Sandhya honestly tried to pick what she thought suited the designers with what she had to work from. She’s honest and big-hearted.
So Hernan bought vinyl to work with because that always makes things easy. Mitchell ended up putting his material inside a clear material for a cool-looking effect. It was just too short. When the models tell the designer the outfit’s too short, it’s WAY too short. He was safe.
Sandhya chose a yellow and purple suit and ended up with a cute bright outfit. she was safe.
I liked Fade’s design too.

As the designers walk out to the runway to hear about the latest challenge, there are Marie Claire covers all over the walls. Amanda gushes: “Marie Claire covers with the original supermodels. This is so up my alley. [Project Runway cliché.] I am thrilled.”
Executive-in-Chief of Marie Claire, Anne Fulenwider is a guest judge along with Undone host Amanda deCadenet. It’s Marie Claire’s 20th anniversary. The magazine hit shelves in 1994. Heidi had just arrived in New York as a 21-year-old model. Tim already had been teaching at Parsons for 12 years. Nina worked as a production assistant in the garment district. And cutie-pie Zac was 14 years old and “probably wearing vests over t-shirts.”
The challenge: design for Marie Claire 2034. Or “what the future of fashion looks like through your design aesthetic,” says Tim.
Nothing terribly exciting going on except that per usual no one liked Sandhya’s design or could even figure out what she was doing. I’ve yet to have issue with Sandhya and her work. Alexander said what everyone thought: “I’m confused by Sandhya.” Sandhya is this season’s Patricia [S11]. When Alexander’s model came in for the fitting, the bust didn’t fit properly. Doesn’t he have her measurements?
Tim to Christine: “Tomorrow on the runway exude unconditional confidence.” This sounds like a fantastic inspirational mantra.
