Project Runway S12.Ep13 finale part one: RECAP

Between the sponsored design challenges and lackluster designers, Project Runway has less pizazz than in earlier seasons. I barely remember who won the past few seasons and can’t recall that many designers that really stood out. In a few weeks there’s another Project Runway All-Stars and looking at the list of designers, I only recognized three and I’m almost positive I only missed the first season and *maybe* one other. I’ve liked Dom since episode two and wanted her in the final three and that’s happening. Of course for the final spot, as with the past few seasons, Heidi decided that the judges would make the designers complete collections and then show the judges three looks on the runway. One designer would advance to New York Fashion Week [NYFW].
The remaining designers need to create a 10-look collection for Spring.
$9000 budget and one look designed with unconventional materials. They have six weeks to design their collections.
Bradon and Dom are designing for NYFW.
Alexandria, Justin and Helen must compete to show at NYFW.
Tim Gunn visits everyone at home to see how they’re progressing.
Dom in Philadelphia
–raised by single mom and her mom runs a restaurant
–inspired by Blade Runner and retrofuturism, angular lines meeting curved lines
–did some drawings and prints with watercolors and made prints
–Mending braces for doors for unconventional piece
–only 3 ½ looks completed
–Dom’s drawings are gorgeous and her concept’s great.
Bradon in Los Angeles
–inspiration growing up in New York state with crocuses poking up through the snow and springtime “clash of nature”
–he’s completed six pieces
–Seeing lots of floral dresses. Unsure what to think and not inspired by his inspirations.
Alexandria in San Mateo, Calif
–edgy, strong and modern “neo-romantic-punk”
–she says it’s “understated but detail oriented”
–she takes Tim to Camp Couture. Not sure if it’s sweat shop training or what it’s supposed to be. the kids are cute and look pretty happy.
–I like the idea for her collection but it’s all in black, beige, gray and white.
Helen in Unionville, NJ
–inspiration is clairvoyance—knowing the unknown—took a photograph of an eye
–using red and some print
–Tim says: “you need to do something that speaks to some innovation”
–Not liking her color palette. The entire collection’s red and a blue print. That never works.
Back in New York when talking to Tim, Helen kept saying how long she worked on something and how hard she worked. “I spend hours on this.” As soon as she talked that way which she’s been doing the entire show I knew she wasn’t making it to New York Fashion Week. Although she’s been a good designer and had won some challenges she’s insecure about her designs and can’t push herself enough. Her vision isn’t clear enough on its own. She needs more time.

Challenge: create an avant-garde look inspired by butterflies
Dom
–Crossbreeding textiles as the butterflies crossbreed
–Jumpsuit underneath another style
Tim: “what do the judges like most from you?”
Helen
–Cape with only her face exposed. A big wrapping, cocoon-like. Then she has this orange dress.
Tim says it’s too much. She starts crying and freaking out.
Tim: “I’m going to give you some tough love. Get out of this conundrum. Rally. Rally.”
Alexandria
–Unfinished silk effect black dress.
Tim: “It’s on the Goth side. I’m a fan.”
Bradon
“My idea is that the back becomes gown-like.”
Tim: “Well, the back’s spectacular. I love it as a piece of sculpture.”

Tim thinks the textile looks inexpensive so Justin might swap out to another fabric.
They’ll work on the models make-up with Billy B, consulting make-up artist for L’Oreal Paris and also Tom, global nail expert for L’Oreal Paris.
After working on avant garde designs, the next day the designers come in and have to make a transformation look. They choose a losing design and have to transform the look.

Lifetime TV movie review: House of Versace

“You know we created the supermodel. It wasn’t until we took the print girls—Naomi, Christy, Linda, Cindy and put them on the runway.” Donatella Versace to a Vanity Fair editor.
The little I knew about Donatella Versace I’d gleaned through tabloids. Not that I knew much about the Versace family or designer Gianni other than his shocking 1997 murder outside his Miami home. I knew the red carpet Versace looks and the glossy magazine ads and other bits and pieces. This film fills in tons of gaps with a solid script and an authentic performance from Gina Gershon as Donatella Versace.
We start right with Gianni [Enrico Colantoni] preparing a runway show amidst a rush of dresses and models. In swoops Donatella. She glances at a model and scoffs at the sandals she’s wearing. Gianni gives his explanation for a connection to the earth but Donatella thinks it’s ridiculous. She whispers to someone to put all the models in stilettos. The woman says, “He’s going to kill you.” The crowd goes wild and after the show Gianni tells Donatella that she was right.
A strongly run family business, Gianni designs the collection, Donatella works as stylist/ publicist and eldest brother Santo [Colm Feore] runs the business end of things. Of course, being the designer, Gianni remains the star and garners much of the credit for the styles. Although extremely close there’s lots of bickering and competition. Donatella possesses a keen sense for trends, publicity and business. She does interviews, handles photo shoots and garners celebrity clients by attending parties and public events. Gianni prefers to remain home with his boyfriend. He’s quieter though many consider him difficult. Donatella wishes she were as creative as Gianni and Gianni wishes he possessed his sister’s publicity and styling abilities. They’re strangely supportive yet jealous of each other. During one particularly awful fight Gianni tells Donatella: “I am the designer. Me. Gianni Versace. And you, Donatella are a stylist.”
Understandably Gianni’s murder rips House of Versace to the core. Donatella enters a truly dark period. She subsists on cocaine, cigarettes, booze, pills and little sleep. Now it’s almost a Lifetime docu-drama “how to lose 100 million in a few years.” Donatella has 20 percent of Versace, Santo has 30 and Gianni left niece Allegra 50 percent. At first this hurts Donatella immensely as if Gianni were trying to control her or ridicule her in some manner. She thinks that he’s “haunting” her from the grave. She feels she’ll end up working for her daughter, losing control of the company, not being able to do what she’d hoped—be a designer in her own right. Versace nearly goes bankrupt. Aunt Lucia [Raquel Welch] comes in to take care of Donatella and her family.
We watch this struggle for Donatella. In attempting to keep Versace going, she tries to remain true to Gianni’s style, relying on drugs and booze to keep her going. Darkness engulfs her and she struggles with that fact that Gianni didn’t believe in her enough to leave the company with her but with her young daughter. She’s terribly insecure. Donatella left college to help Gianni with his dream. She always wanted to have her own fashion line. Her marriage suffers and her children feel alienated as she focused so much on the business.
This is based on Deborah Ball’s book House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival. Directed by Sara Sugarman and with a script by Rama Stagner [that avoids Allegra’s struggles with anorexia and places the focus on Donatella], Gina Gershon brings empathy and depth to her role as Donatella Versace. Many might wonder why they should care about this wealthy woman who hobnobs with celebrities and holds ritzy international parties and outfits A-listers for the most glamorous events. Although this film covers a limited period in Versace’s life it’s clear she’s worked hard to become a successful designer and business icon. She nearly lost her family, ruined her life with drugs and bankrupted her family business.
When she turns 18, Allegra takes over her half and sends her mom to rehab but wants to go to college and be a “normal” girl. When Donatella returns from rehab she’s fresh with design ideas and a new attitude toward her future with the family business. She takes a new approach toward designing a collection. A sober one. Seven years after Gianni’s death Donatella finally designs a collection that fits her aesthetic.
House of Versace premieres on Lifetime on October 5 at 8pm ET/PT.

Project Runway S12. Ep10: RECAP

Superfan Challenge: L’Oreal Paris Makeover
2-Days for the challenge. Budget is 200-400.
–“Ultimate Project Runway experience”—meet Tim and tour Parsons and the runway set. Tim lets them walk the runway.
Tim tells the designers that they have new clients and that their new clients are excited. “These ladies are Project Runway superfans. Each of these ladies are going to be given a makeover by you.”
Ken: “Tim’s talking and all I hear is blah blah blah. I’ve never sewn for real women.”
Bradon/ Jennifer: black dress w/ black dress over the top—edgy. Jennifer tells Bradon that she wants a very “New York” look.
Dom/Jane-Sarah : date dress of which Tim says: “I find this print to be very problematic.” I like Dom and think she’s talented and think she turned out a lovely dress.
Alexander/Andrea : making a fitted tailored suit. “if this isn’t superbly presented, it’s doomsday,” Tim.
Helen/ Jamie: elegant and modern dress “my philosophy with Jamie is that she’s a wallflower but underneath all those bangs and glasses, she’s a bombshell,” Helen
Alexandria/Stephanie : jacket and skirt, modern and conservative at the same time for a art history major
Justin/ Tristin: black dress. Tristin apparently lost a lot of weight. Justin wanted to make a one-of-a-kind dress and he embroidered her signature on the dress in a sophisticated way. She told him she wanted a modest dress becasue she was Mormon so he didn’t make it low cut or showing too much skin but beautiful still.
Ken/Susie : green and black dress
Kate/ Altagracia: “wants to look like a hot mom”
Alexander and Bradon need to move into Ken and Justin’s room. When Alexander tries to get into the room, Ken’s ironing and refuses to budge. He tells Alexander he’ll be done in a minute. He’s truly pissed that he even has to make rooming changes any longer. As soon as Ken moves, Alexander walks in and pushes the iron board aside and the iron flew off. Ken had a tantrum and the talent coordinator came in to calm him down. It’s possible he has a mood disorder. The next morning, all the designers had to discuss what happened.

Lifetime TV movie review: Taken: The Search for Sophie Parker

18-year-old Sophie [Naomi Battrick] travels to Moscow for spring break with her friend Janie [Jemma Dallender] whose father is the U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Although her mother, NYPD detective Stevie [Julie Benz], worries about her a bit she knows that she’s staying at the embassy and should be safe. She tells her partner Jimmy Devlin [Jeffrey Meek]: “She’s grown up so fast. Now she’s wearing make-up and mini-skirts. I still have her Malibu Barbie Dream House . . . Seriously Devlin. What was I thinking sending my teenage daughter to spring break in Moscow?” Devlin reminds her: “It’s Janie’s dad they’re staying with. The point is it’s the U.S. Embassy they’re staying in. They have armed guards around the perimeter.”
Stevie and Devlin aren’t getting along so well at work. Devlin’s frustrated because he loves Stevie and wants more than the occasional hook-up and working together. He’s putting in for a transfer and tells her she needs to let go of the past, particularly her dead husband. Julie Benz plays emotionally damaged characters really well. I like this one better than her Dexter character because she’s a bit more independent and not as much of a doormat. Clearly Stevie’s got self-esteem issues and trust issues with men.
In Moscow after several days sightseeing, Sophie and Janie are restless to see a different side of the city. They meet a cute boy at a museum who gives them a card and his cell number and tells them he’s a concert promoter. “SMS me,” he says. That night the girls sneak out of the Embassy, head to the club where Bobby [Matvey Borushko] takes a picture of them and gets told by a shady dude working as the bartender that they’d garner twice the amount of money because they’re 18 and American.
He brings them shots and Janie drinks both of them without questioning the contents. Turns out they’re spiked and soon she’s almost passed out and tells Sophie she doesn’t feel well. Sophie helps her out of the club where some men surround them and put them into a van (later discovered have Russian mafia ties). Really liked that Sophie’s been well-trained as both a New York kid and the daughter of a police officer. When the men start to take her she dials her mom’s number and leaves the cell on while she uses self-defense methods to try to ward off the attackers as best she can. She also calls out the name “Bobby.” As soon as her mom gets that call, she’s in police detective and super mom mode– off to save her daughter in Russia.
Bobby, the young guy who befriended the girls, is handsome, charming so not someone who’d raise any red flags. It’s so important that young women see that anyone could abduct them. It’s not always some creepy, looking loner type. It could be someone they’d want to date. They both think he’s cute. They would never think he’d try to hurt them and that’s often how young women get into dangerous situations at nightclubs or fraternity parties etc. Well done on that casting Lifetime. A pretty face can be the face of evil. What scared me was that he took their picture and then went to consult with a guy at the bar and they said that they could get double the price because they were American and 18. Just chilling that people market people’s lives. That they buy and sell people without a second thought.
Sophie’s mom gets on the next plane to Moscow and starts searching for her daughter knowing — as with most missing persons cases–that she only has about 48 hours. CIA agent [Amy Bailey] assigned to the Embassy helps Sophie and quickly matters become dangerous as they involve both the Russian mafia and possibly the police. The movie goes off the rails when the CIA agent and Stevie started talking about the men they cared about but didn’t have much time for due to their careers. Not leaning in apparently. The CIA agent mentioned her Navy Seal’s last name and that it was almost a deal breaker. Really? You realize you don’t have to change your name. And then she asked Stevie about her guy and his last name and said it was a good last name for her name. Oh, Lifetime, you’ve come so far and yet still have so far to go toward the advancement of women and women’s empowerment and women’s equality. I guess what do I expect when popular shows include Devious Maids and Dance Moms?
This is a fast-paced, effective movie about the dangers involved with young women traveling abroad in Eastern Europe and Asia where sex trafficking’s become a massive money making industry where people’s lives are the commodities. People’s lives are ruined. People are treated as property. It’s scary and disgusting.
The U.S. State Department estimates that 27 million people are victims of human trafficking, many forced into sexual slavery and many never heard from again.

“Now that I’ve achieved some of the things that I’ve wanted to achieve, I’m not going to be a slave to it all of a sudden. I respect the artist that lives that way. The people that just go, ‘You’re going to hate me for what I just did, or you’re not going to understand why I made that film or that record or whatever, but what you are watching is someone that’s living their life.’ You know: I’m not watching you; you’re watching me.”
“That really is more about the writing of The Wire than it is the performance. You know, Stringer Bell is a great character that was written. I happened to play him, but it could’ve been anybody playing that role.”

Project Runway S12.Ep9: RECAP

Heidi tells the designers they’re getting the morning off for a Southern-style brunch at Juliette. During brunch, Tim arrives to inform them of the latest challenge. It’s for the southern woman. He reminds them that Southern women love bright colors and dresses vibrantly and expressively. She likes feminine details and uses accessories.

Bradon—“I love this textile,” Tim says. Bradon’s worried that it’s a bit too 50s

Jeremy—“excited to be working on a tailored jacket” in red. Dress underneath in a print that’s long and fitted and mid-calf
Ken—Tim seems happy with what he’s doing and most designers think that he’s the biggest threat
Helen—“inspiration was fresh and outdoors”
Dom—“designed a basic maxi” and Tim asks if it’s under-designed
Alexandria—“it’s reading very Bohemian-like,” Tim says.

BRADON is the WINNER of the challenge.
Bottom three designers have one hour to re-design their outfits or start off and show the judges a more modern look. They can work with one other designer. Jeremy works with Alexander. Ken chooses Kate because she can sew quickly and she “knows how things work.” Dom picks Helen because she’s the “only one she trusts.”

New Balance Challenge: Create fashionable active wear for Heidi’s New Balance collection
Relay race–winners choose fabric first and gets one extra hour of work time one day challenge

Winners: Dom and Justin

Kate: “I’m inspired by my little brother because he likes motocross racing.”
Helen: “I wanted to create a three-piece look.” She’s designing a jacket, tee and pants.
Karen: “I’m drawn to geometrical lines and designs.”
Back in the workroom, Helen asked Tim a question about whether she could use the pieces as reference to mock-up their own designs. Ken then asked Helen what he asked Tim. She said she wasn’t going to tell anyone. Ken of course went off and gave her a bunch of attitude and flipped out big time. Helen felt that he was threatening her. She then told Tim what happened so that Tim and the producers would be aware. Ken called his mom and then spoke to his spiritual advisor. Tim then pulled him aside to talk calmly to him. “I’m your ally,” Tim told Ken. “I’ve been frustrated all day and I flipped out on you for no reason and I like you,” Ken told Helen.
Heidi and Tim come in to critique what the designers are working on.
Kate—says it’s unique in that it has more volume and length
Helen–Workout tee with gather on the bum in the pants, third piece would be a jacket
“Heidi and Tim said I need a wow piece”
Justin– “I’m very intimidated” with Heidi doing the critique
Karen–Idea of sports bra with style lines
Heidi: “it is impossible. It is Martian it is crazy. I don’t see anyone wanting to have this. It looks trashy. You have to think more elegant.”
Alexander–They tell him to reduce the piping a bit
Dom –Says she likes to show some skin
Jeremy–Blushes when Heidi comes over
Ken–Heidi says Ken’s design could be a scuba suit
Bradon–Trying to create an optical illusion
Alexandria– She’s designing a drop crotch pant with a jacket. It’s all in black though.
“I train a lot. I’ve run over 50 marathons.”
