Imagine Linda Ronstadt, LL Cool J, Nirvana & Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) jamming on “Big Ole Butt?” Would that be the song they’d pick? There’s no way LL Cool J will make the Hall of Fame this year. Or is there? Sadly, Ronstadt has Parkinson’s and can no longer sing.
There are 16 Nominees including:

Mirror Travel: music review
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on October 14, 2013
Austin, Texas trio Mirror Travel is comprised of: Tiffanie Lanmon (drums), Paul Brinkley (bass/vocals) and Lauren Green (guitar/vocals). Power and respect to this band for being 2/3 female. That’s rarely seen these days. The band recorded Mexico at Marfa Recording Studios in Marfa, Texas. Have you heard about Marfa and the Marfa lights in the desert? That’s a bold choice with all the strange phenomena surrounding Marfa. It surely added something to the unusual atmospheric and dreamscape sound of the band. While Mirror Travel opens with the dreamy, escapist instrumental “Sand,” the core of their songs fall into that fuzzy, gritty garage band sound reminiscent of 90s female-fronted bands like Velocity Girl or that dog. They add their own edginess to modernize the songs. Lauren Green’s vocals simultaneously exude heartache and perception. Touches of gray. A thing of beauty. “Parties” churns with raging riffs and Green’s raspy astute observations. Cool tempo provides moodiness to “Uncharted Waters.” This is a band to watch. Check out the new album and catch them on their fall tour.

How to Be Alone by Tanya Davis. Publisher: Harper (October 22, 2013). Poetry. Hardcover. 128 pages. ISBN 9780062280848.
Canadian singer/songwriter and poet Tanya Davis writes: “Society is afraid of alone though- like lonely hearts are wasting away in basements, like people must have problems if after a while no one’s dating them” in this advice poem. That’s an unfortunate truth. I’ve never had problems or issues in doing anything alone. Societal expectations compel people to believe they MUST always do things in groups. Sometimes solitude can be just the thing. I just went out to a show Saturday—Grace & Tony and Kingsley Flood. I see a film a week in the theater. I prefer it that way. I go to book readings. I never understand when someone says “I want to see X film but I have no one to go with.” I say just go! This could make a cute gift book though for those in fear of being by themselves.

“And everyone’s sink/ gets all full of dishes, and everyone’s heart/ gets all full of wishes./ And everyone’s mind/ gets all full of mess,/ and we all read the signs,/ and we all try our best.”
Children’s author and illustrator Dallas Clayton decided to published this “children’s book for adults.” It’s about making the most of time, striving for everything you dream about and want. It’s rather whimsical and fun. Makes a delightful little gift.

Project Runway S12.Ep13 finale part one: RECAP
Posted by Amy Steele in TV on October 12, 2013
Between the sponsored design challenges and lackluster designers, Project Runway has less pizazz than in earlier seasons. I barely remember who won the past few seasons and can’t recall that many designers that really stood out. In a few weeks there’s another Project Runway All-Stars and looking at the list of designers, I only recognized three and I’m almost positive I only missed the first season and *maybe* one other. I’ve liked Dom since episode two and wanted her in the final three and that’s happening. Of course for the final spot, as with the past few seasons, Heidi decided that the judges would make the designers complete collections and then show the judges three looks on the runway. One designer would advance to New York Fashion Week [NYFW].
The remaining designers need to create a 10-look collection for Spring.
$9000 budget and one look designed with unconventional materials. They have six weeks to design their collections.
Bradon and Dom are designing for NYFW.
Alexandria, Justin and Helen must compete to show at NYFW.
Tim Gunn visits everyone at home to see how they’re progressing.
Dom in Philadelphia
–raised by single mom and her mom runs a restaurant
–inspired by Blade Runner and retrofuturism, angular lines meeting curved lines
–did some drawings and prints with watercolors and made prints
–Mending braces for doors for unconventional piece
–only 3 ½ looks completed
–Dom’s drawings are gorgeous and her concept’s great.
Bradon in Los Angeles
–inspiration growing up in New York state with crocuses poking up through the snow and springtime “clash of nature”
–he’s completed six pieces
–Seeing lots of floral dresses. Unsure what to think and not inspired by his inspirations.
Alexandria in San Mateo, Calif
–edgy, strong and modern “neo-romantic-punk”
–she says it’s “understated but detail oriented”
–she takes Tim to Camp Couture. Not sure if it’s sweat shop training or what it’s supposed to be. the kids are cute and look pretty happy.
–I like the idea for her collection but it’s all in black, beige, gray and white.
Helen in Unionville, NJ
–inspiration is clairvoyance—knowing the unknown—took a photograph of an eye
–using red and some print
–Tim says: “you need to do something that speaks to some innovation”
–Not liking her color palette. The entire collection’s red and a blue print. That never works.
Back in New York when talking to Tim, Helen kept saying how long she worked on something and how hard she worked. “I spend hours on this.” As soon as she talked that way which she’s been doing the entire show I knew she wasn’t making it to New York Fashion Week. Although she’s been a good designer and had won some challenges she’s insecure about her designs and can’t push herself enough. Her vision isn’t clear enough on its own. She needs more time.
Justin in Raleigh, NC
–inspired by sound waves and the story of before and after he got his cochlear implants.
–for unconventional he’s using test tubes and covering a garment with them
–Seems pretty cool.
Runway
Justin
“I am so happy that Tim Gunn used his save on you and brought you back. I thought it was very fashion forward. Your clothes are very fashion-forward.” –Heidi Klum
“Your first look is very chic. You finale is a wow piece. The 3-D printing is so cool. It’s a great resource in technology.” –Zac Posen
“There’s something very poetic about your designs.” –Nina Garcia
As far as a theme, Justin’s collection has it. And the story’s inspirational and intriguing. His test tube dress looks totally cool.
Alexandria
“Your clothes are fashion-forward. There’s so much detail. I want to have all of this.” –Heidi
“It has a luxe quality to it. The detailing looks very professional.” –Zac Posen
“When it walked out I knew immediately it was you. I fear this is going to look boring. I don’t know if these clothes are show-worthy clothes.” –Nina Garcia
When the judges were discussing the three designers later, Heidi said “poor thing she thinks gray, beige and white are colors.” Very funny.
Helen
“I love this minimal yet feminine silhouette that your clothes have.” –Nina Garcia
“You get modern women. The last dress looks like a concept that didn’t come to fruition.” –Zac Posen
“I’m so not happy with what you did today. They’re stuck and they look sad to me.” –Heidi Klum
Justin is IN. Not surprised at all. Alexandria is IN. Both showing at NYFW.
Helen is OUT.

His Clancyness: music review
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on October 10, 2013
So here’s indie rocker His Clancyness, the alias for Jonathan Clancy, born in Ottawa and dividing time between Canada and Italy. A beautiful vocalist with his dreamy, dazzlingly arranged debut album entitled Vicious. He considers Modern Lovers, Lee Hazelwood, Zombies, Swell Maps and Stevie Nicks some of his influences. “Safe Around the Edges” opens with quick guitar and drum beat with resonant vocals. Pulls you in immediately. A nostalgic-laden “Miss Out These Days” features a relaxed His Clancyness. But then on “Gold Diggers,” he’s speak-singing about money matters at times on this beautifully crafted song. When the speed picks up on “Zenith Diamond” it’s reminiscent of muffled punk-pop bands The Replacements and Sonic Youth. Something clicks for me on this one. It puts me in a content mood. His Clancyness conveys talent through diverse arrangements plus sensitivity and charisma with that soothing voice.

STEELE INTERVIEWS: singer/songerwriter Tony White [Grace & Tony]
Posted by Amy Steele in Interview, Music on October 9, 2013
Punk rocker Tony White saw Grace Schultz– a bluegrass musician and gospel singer– performing and became smitten. Sometime later he asked her to jam with him. They hit it off and decided to meld their styles into something unique and fabulous which they’ve termed “punkgrass.” The now-married Tennessee duo writes gothic tales with an edgy, dramatic flair. Their debut album November [Rock Ridge Music] will be released on November 12.
I recently interviewed Tony White.
Amy Steele: When did you each start playing music and singing?
Tony White: I started playing guitar when I was 15 or so. Was handed off a few chords from my brother and just took it from there. Have always loved to entertain. Grace has been a natural performer her whole life. She has stories of drowning out the entire church with her voice when she was a little girl. She plays many instruments, but I think when her Paw Paw Shultz taught her the guitar, her desire to perform really began. He would be so proud…
Amy Steele: What drew you to music?
Tony White: I’ve always been moved by music. For as long as I can remember my life has been set to the musical soundtrack in my head. Grace uses music as a therapeutic way to cope with a lot of things in her life. Stress, studying, etc…
Amy Steele: Where and how did you meet?
Tony White: We had mutual friends through the years, but didn’t actually meet until I invited her for a jam. I had a bunch of leftover punk rock tunes from a band I was coming out of, and had seen (stalked) on the internet that she played banjo and mandolin. Our music and love has grown together.
Amy Steele: How does being a couple influence your music?
Tony White: I think raising kids, paying bills, and the everyday struggles of being married help form a strong bond as a duo. Though we fight like cats and dogs while we write, we try to remember to keep those disagreements out of our marriage. We are definitely starting to find our groove as a songwriting team, and have a great start on the next album already.
Amy Steele: You’re now playing what you’ve dubbed punkgrass. Very unique folk/ Americana with gothic undertones. What is your songwriting process like?
Tony White: We don’t have a certain formula. Sometimes in starts with a melody, sometimes it starts with a riff, you just never know. But I (Tony) tend to be more of a melody guy, and Grace is the more natural lyricist of the two.
Amy Steele: Where do your song ideas come from?
Tony White: We draw our ideas from everything we see around us. A certain mood, an event in our life, even books and movies. We try to avoid anything typical.
Amy Steele: When you recorded this album you worked with a full band. How do you usually write music/ perform and how was that different?
Tony White: With the direction of Lloyd Aur Norman (Producer) and Stephen Jones (Engineer) of Villain Place in Nashville, we decided the best way to present this group of songs on the album was to bring in players. Without the luxury of the live connection we make with the audience, we didn’t want to lose any energy. Had a great time playing with other musicians and would be surprised if we didn’t do it again on the next one. But live, it’s Grace and I against the world.
Amy Steele: How has your music changed in the last few years that you’ve been playing together?
Tony White: Whereas the first batch of songs were mostly pre-written punk rock tunes, the November album was written with a certain style set in place. We wanted to create something we would listen to ourselves, something different.
Amy Steele: In what ways do you use social media to interact with fans?
Tony White: Social media has been huge for us, because it’s a free way to make connections with your audience. We regularly do Q&A’s with our fans, as well as contest giveaways. We have made ourselves available and always respond to any email or question we may receive.
Amy Steele: What can someone expect from a Grace & Tony show?
Tony White: You can expect a stripped-down version of these songs that were written for two people, just the way they are supposed to sound. We love to make a genuine connection with our audience, before and after the show.
Amy Steele: What makes a good song?
Tony White: For us it’s all about something unique. All of our songs are written in simple punk rock style formats, with hooks and harmonies. But it’s being unique that we strive for. We want you to leave the show feeling as if you just saw something new, and we want that same reaction after you hear a G&T song.
Amy Steele: Why did you name the album November?
Tony White: The album is named November because we met on November 21, 2010. And the rest is history. 🙂
Grace & Tony will playing The Paradise Rock Club with Kingsley Flood on Saturday, October 14, 2013.
FILM: what to watch– indie, instant, documentary, foreign
Posted by Amy Steele in DVD, Film on October 9, 2013
On Thursday, a friend and I plan to see Gravity on a long-planned movie date. In the past week, I’ve seen several wonderful films that I must recommend.
indie in theaters:
ENOUGH SAID
–writer/ director Nicole Holofcener [Lovely and Amazing, Friends with Money] creates wonderfully complicated characters. A masseuse [Julia Louis-Dreyfus] begins dating a guy [James Gandolfini] who turns out to be the ex-husband of a new friend. Julia Louis-Dreyfus exudes warmth and charm, James Gandolfini plays insecure and the film is sweet and smart.
on Netflix instant:
WAR WITCH
— intense, amazing film about a girl kidnapped and forced to be a rebel soldier in sub-Saharan Africa. when she develops intuition to where the enemy is she’s deemed a witch and works alongside the leader. that is until one day she meets an unusual boy who might provide her a way out from this terrible existence. brutal and beautiful. this 12-year-old girl’s survival story.
documentary on DVD:
WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE
–Spike Lee’s four-part compelling, heartbreaking, eye-opening documentary about Hurricane Katrina. He digs deeps for answers and interviews a wide patch of people. It’s remarkable and must-see viewing.
foreign on DVD:
LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED
— A surprising and delightful film by Susanne Bier. A young couple intends to marry during a weekend in Naples, Italy they begin to question their relationship and their respective families start to unravel with their own problems. The bride’s mother, Ida, a hairdresser [Trine Dyrholm] who lost all her hair to cancer found her husband cheating on her with a younger woman. She traveled solo to Naples, Italy for the wedding. The groom’s father, Philip, [Pierce Brosnan] misses his wife who died in an accident many years ago and Italy brings back memories. Although Ida and Philip don’t get along at first they soon find themselves quite attracted to each other while their children seem less likely to get married as the weekend progresses.
Mount Kimbie: live review
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on October 8, 2013
Mount Kimbie got the crowd dancing, jumping and bopping about at The Sinclair on Monday night. The sweet, low-key London electronica duo played a 50 minute set using a bevy of instruments along with music sequencers, samplers and synthesizers. Kai Campos and Dominic Maker in addition to tour drummer Tony Kus are currently on tour to support their second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth [Warp Records]. While there’s not a lot of crowd interaction a gentle bliss washes over you. For this post-dubstep, ambient aural experience it’s a bonus to be among other fans and music lovers to fully appreciate it.
October 29: CSFLY Remixes [Warp Records], a new 12” of reworked tracks taken off this year’s Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, with remixes from DJ Koze, Kyle Hall and Lee Gamble.
