new music: Perfume Genius

“Pop Song” is the bright, ethereal, lush new Perfume Genius song from The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance and music performance collaboration with Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallichof. The Sun Still Burns Here is commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and created, in part, with the support of The Joyce Theater Foundation’s Artist Residency Center. Perfume Genius is the stage name of Seattle-based musician Mike Hadreas. About “Pop Song,” Hadreas said: “I imagined an ecstatic pile of bodies preparing to be consumed by the gods. A joyous communal sacrifice of the physical to spiritually level up. The lyric is like a conjuration spell to be sung when the mountain of bodies settles in position and is held still as an offering.”

Tei Shi (the artist moniker of Valerie Teicher) recently released a new single “Even If It Hurts” featuring Blood Orange. The beautiful new video was produced in partnership with sun-grown cannabis Sunday Goods. It was directed by Cara Stricker and filmed in Untermeyer Gardens in Yonkers, New York. Stricker said: “I wanted to explore the iconography of love in art history through a modern yet romantic lens. Creating stillness and emotive movement to reflect the physical or emotional space in love… vulnerability, numbing immersion, knowing the truth, becoming closer, fighting for it, letting them in…even if it hurts. It’s a conversation between opposing perspectives in a relationship.”
Tei Shi said: “I made this song with two of my closest collaborators – Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and Noah Breakfast. It came together in pieces between LA and New York but sprouted from the lyrics Dev and I kept on singing – ‘even if it hurts…I just don’t mind’. The concept is really the realization and acceptance that pain is a natural consequence of love. It’s a duet about the ways in which we make ourselves vulnerable to those we love, sometimes at a high cost. The video was directed by Cara Stricker and with an incredible and almost exclusively female creative crew. It features a multitude of amazing designers like Collina Strada, Vaquera, Christopher John Rogers, Mugler, Maryam Nassir Zadeh . I wanted to capture the romantic and melancholic elements of the song but put them in a world that feels removed from the every day, its own little odd paradise where Dev and I existed parallel to one another but never really together.”
Tei Shi will release her sophomore album, La Linda, on November 15, 2019.

“Run the Flowers” is the latest mesmerizing track off the upcoming album, Inflorescent, from Friendly Fires, eight years after their last album. Childhood friends Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge, got together in Macfarlane’s parents’ St Albans garage at the end of 2017 and wrote a song based on three scrawled words: “Love. Like. Waves.” They recorded the album at various London studios with co-producers Alongside producers / co-producers Mark Ralph, James Ford and Disclosure. Friendly Fires will be playing New York and Los Angeles in September.

Grammy-nominated K. Flay released a new single– “Sister”– with a dark driving beat and uplifting lyrics. It’s from her upcoming album Solutions which is out July 12, 2019. Her music combines analog synths with live bass and guitar, infusing pop, rock, hip-hop, and electronica.
Here’s what the Illinois native had to say about sisterhood: “Being a sister isn’t about gender or DNA. It’s about unselfconscious love. About saying I’M HERE, I LOVE YOU, IT’S OK TO BE YOURSELF, and hearing those words echoed back. Not because you asked for them, but because they’re true. Girls are sisters and boys are sisters. Dads are sisters to their sons. Mothers sisters to their mothers too. I’ve come to understand that family is created. Family is a verb. It’s something you build day by day, sometimes in the hot sun and sometimes when everything is going wrong.”
About the album title, Flay said: “The solution to almost every problem is usually really simple. For me, it’s so basic: staying connected to the people I love, taking care of myself the way I’d want my friends to take care of themselves, and doing things I know are going to make me happy – not what social media or strangers or society tells me. So many of my past records were about problems. Right now I’m in a place where I’m looking for some light. Balance is important. Life doesn’t have to be chaotic in order to be meaningful.”

FALL TOUR: Billie Eilish

16-year-old alt-pop phenom Billie Eilish kicks off a headlining North American tour on October 23, 2018 at Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. Tour stops include Boston, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago. Ethereal vocals mix with dark lyrics to create beautiful and often haunting songs. Her debut EP ‘don’t smile at me’ has 761 MILLION combined streams globally. This month, “Lovely (with Khalid)” was also officially certified as RIAA GOLD in North America and PLATINUM in Australia. Born and raised in Los Angeles by two actor/musician parents, Billie Eilish began singing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus when she was eight years old. She co-writes a lot of her music with her brother Finneas O’Connell.

Enviably accomplished at 30, Kate Nash is not merely a fantastic musician, she’s also a feminist activist and stars as Rhonda Richardson on Netflix’s GLOW, one of my favorite new shows. It’s brilliant, inspirational and female-centric. Her fourth studio album, Yesterday Was Forever will be released March 30, 2018 and she will be on tour this spring. Her bubblegum pop music with smart and thoughtful lyrics seriously helped me through some brutal times. Empowerment with infectious beats. The first single– “Drink About You” is out now.
About the new single, Kate explains: “’Drink About You’ is about breaking up with someone and becoming obsessed with an idea of who they are, to the point you can’t think of anything else or move on. It’s an unhealthy obsession, you imagine things are better than they are and latch on to whatever you can about the relationship that could be turned to good. And you deal with the pain in an unhealthy way too.”

Frameworks, “Branches”
–perfect for a Sunday. smooth and inviting. house beats that burst euphorically yet subdued. EP out now. British downtempo and instrumental hip hop producer Matthew Brewer aka Frameworks released the EP Branches [Loci Records] on November 20.
FEMME, “Gold”
–upbeat and bold. fantastic song. dance-able and empowering. Femme says about writing the song: “I wrote “Gold” after spending many days watching ABBA videos and late nights dreaming of Shirley Bassey. It’s about being blinded by someone’s immaculate golden veneer to the point of not realizing you may not be in love at all.” EP out now. debut album out in the spring.
Your Friend, “Come Back From It”
–Taryn Miller is the talent behind Your Friend. Lovely blissful melodies and murky-cool lyrics. Her debut album GUMPTION [Domino] is out January 29. Of the video, Miller says: It was freezing, and wild. He (the motorcycle driver) was weaving between highway traffic and at times, splitting the space between semis. It all came together at the very end of my trip, and was a really lovely way to leave after seeing what so many endured. There was this juxtaposition of the time that I arrived, and the night before I left. The streets were empty on my first day there, and it was exhilarating to be riding back into the city like that, and to have witnessed such resilience during such a dark time.”

music review: Science and the Beat

You know how some days you feel cool and smart and pretty and two days later you want to stay in bed and feel like you’ve made too many mistakes in your life? You know how you feel moody and run with that moodiness into danger and other times into fun? Other times you’re skeptical and feel like you give everything and are honest and open and can’t trust anyone. This is the album for your every emotion. It’s what author Julie Holland, M.D. discusses in her book Moody Bitches. And let’s face it, we all get called bitches when we express ourselves in a way that someone disagrees with. It’s being simultaneously strong and vulnerable. The strong independent spirited woman who’s been fucked over and beats herself up and question herself at times self-assured and other times insecure. This is that album. This is the perfect catharsis for every bad date, every bad relationship and every love EVER.
Science and the Beat infuses varied sounds and energies. It’s the skilled duo of multi-instrumentalists Tasha Katrine and Rob Zilla that create the cool sounds and eclectic arrangements. Part of the goth industrial scene, the pair relocated to Boston from Seattle. Dark beauty always wins my dark heart over. Katrine sometimes snarls, sometimes exudes gentle regrets and always mesmerizes. Some songs are up “Falling Out” and some veer toward the mellow “Mean Streak.” On a song like “Sorry,” Katrine sings what all feel at times being headstrong and should we apologize for being outspoken? There’s the super entrancing, grooving “Never Letting Go” with its retro beats. On “Take It Back,” [“why should I take it back when you couldn’t keep your promises/ you couldn’t take the sting away/ never sleep at night without you” the mood gets reflective and the melody suitably dance-trance. On “Last Call,” it’s completely bold beats and intense, don’t mess with me vox. Great breakup/ workout/ stoner/ party/ female empowerment album.
