music review: Field Mouse

_field_mouse_-_HSL_1500_300

Fitting for the album to open with “A Place You Return to in a Dream” because there’s a cool, effusive fuzzy guitar hook and then the entire album proceeds to put you in a blissful reverie state. Dreamy pop that I play again and again. It’s easy to get caught up in the mesmerizing shoegazing hazy chords with vocalist/guitarist Rachel Browne’s euphonious blurred vocals woven throughout.

Browne formed Field Mouse in 2010 as a duo with producer/guitarist Andrew Futral then they expanded into a four-piece with the addition of bassist Saysha Heinzman and drummer Tim McCoy. Field Mouse beautifully infuses edgy hooks with subtler elements. So there’s the darkness and light combination that’s so compelling if you think of bands like Lush, Curve or Swervedriver.

“Tomorrow is Yesterday” has a grooving bass riff. Browne’s vocals sound a bit like Letters to Cleo’s Kay Hanley, sweet yet storied. Staggering edgy guitar, blurrier lilting vocals and a hypnotic melody on “Two Ships.” Speed picks up on “Everyone but You.” This is a talented band creating indie pop deliciousness with near-perfection. Closing track “Water in the Valley” is bittersweet and lulling with guitar feedback. Spot-on. This is one of my favorite albums of the year.

music review: Money

MONEY-shadowsofheaven-artwork.093035

Money. An unusual band name for an indie band from Manchester, England. Particularly one that labels its music “dystopian choral” on its Facebook page. I’m very picky with band names and this one threw me off. I was hesitant to check out the music but it’s exactly what I like. Melancholy. Ethereal. Swirly. Lead singer Jamie Lee said that the songs focus on universal themes of love and loss and sense of place in the modern world, including issues such as isolation and mental health. These songs convey depth, grace and emotion from every angle with majestic arrangements. “Who’s Going to Love You Know” feature an unusual, broad-stroking vocal composition and escalating harmonies that make it sound quite expansive as if performed in a cavernous space. Entrancing “Bluebell Fields” sounds 90s indie nostalgic. “Goodnight London” effectively utilizes piano for its slower, murky splendor. Lee’s vocals ache and twist on the sprawling “Hold Me Forever”

music review: Hot Victory

hot victory pic

Hot Victory is:

Ben Stoller on drums, pads, and programming
Caitlin Love on drums, pads, tapes, and samples

If you like the creepy, foreshadowing soundtrack on Orphan Black, you’ll love the instrumental constructions of Hot Victory. Dark dream sequences. Anthems. Gorgeous sadness. Triumphant moments. A multitude of emotions played out by two complex, talented musicians. You might not expect this Portland, Ore. duo to create such impassioned music but that’s exactly what they’re doing. Dedicated and precise. Unusual instrumentation and compositions blaze the way for this unique, fantastic experience unlike anything you’ll hear in some time. Tribal. Hypnotic. Beautiful geniuses. Infinite possibilities. You’re taken to various realms. It’s a glorious mind escape or freak out or journey. Take it as you want. You’ll get out of it whatever mood you bring to it at the time. Each piece is a sonic work of art to be interpreted by the listener and appreciated on an individual capacity yet shared with others for full effect. Enjoy the journey.

music review: Megafauna

maximalist

Guitarist/vocalist Dani Neff, drummer Zack Humphrey and bassist Greg Yancey recorded an impressive, spectacular album filled with garage-rock, metallic edginess and aggressive, fast-paced songs. Generally heavier rock than I’d listen to but I’ve fallen in love with Dani Neff’s vocals and feminist spirit.
Neff possesses a potent, versatile voice which reminds me of Garbage’s Shirley Manson. She’s phenomenally talented and expressive through her vocals and guitar shredding. Dani Neff was named Austin’s Best Electric Guitarist by the Austin Chronicle. She’s also a lawyer, feminist, dancer, musician, painter, reiki practitioner. What’s there not to like?

Dani’s voice expresses so many distinct emotions and provides lightness to the darker music that the band pieces together. Generous riffs and heavy drums carry you through “Hug from a Robot” in which Dani sings sweetly. “Time to Go” opens with catchy arrangements and lovely lyrics. There are so many layers to this album. “Haunted Factory” is a bit of an anthem. Thing get a bit twangy on “This Town,” a fun, quick, sultry song. Ending with “Chromatic Fantasy,” a rip-roaring beautiful mediation on goals, pulls everything together. You’ll get something different out of it after every listen–peeling yet another layer from the complex compositions. This is a superbly gifted band and its sophomore album Maximalist showcases those inherent talents.

Luray: music review

thewilder-medium

This Washington, D.C.-based bluegrassy, ethereal [banjo-driven folk]/ Americana band revolves around singer/songwriter Shannon Carey’s gentle, sun-kissed vocals and diverse banjo playing. On the magical, glorious title track Carey sings in subdued style then hits an exquisite high note at the chorus. This song sounds the mellowest and most electric at the same time, keyboards and guitar being central instruments. “Kalorama” [a section of D.C.’s Adams Morgan] sounds distinctly alt-country while “Already There” shimmers with a sweet banjo twang and kicky beat. “Tidalground” features a more atmospheric sound and swirly vocals. From the first note of “Crying,” you’ll feel like you’ve hit the road in cowboy boots. When something seems inherently simple it can’t possibly be. Carey possesses the songwriting abilities and vocal range for Luray to straddle several genres while maintaining its own sound. Even though her brother Sean (S. Carey of Bon Iver—a more brooding indie band) produced the album, Shannon clearly prefers singing and writing songs with happier vibes. Think fresh air, blue skies, paddles dipping into cool water, trail mixes, reading on a hammock and long winding hikes.

Blind Pilot: music review

SPOILER: my first negative music review in a long time

Blind Pilot has opened for two of my favorite bands: The Decemberists and The Shins. It is also opening for Dave Matthews Band which makes way more sense to me. I went to a Dave Matthews show about a decade ago to see opener Beck. My galpal and the crowd sang and danced away to the white bread music of Dave Matthews Band [okay, I admit I liked that song “Circle”]. I digress, back to Blind Pilot. It’s a six-piece ensemble with Oregonian band founders Israel Nebeker (vocals, guitar) and Ryan Dobrowski (drums) plus Luke Ydstie (upright bass, backing vocals), Kati Claborn (banjo, dulcimer, backing vocals), Ian Krist (vibraphones) and Dave Jorgensen (keyboards, trumpet). And we all know that Portland, Oregon is the indie/ cool capital of the United States [Portlandia anyone?]. So this all makes for quite the impressive indie pedigree. Unfortunately I feel that Blind Pilot suffers from drowsy, cliched orchestration and sloggy songwriting. It might be quite the dullest, most vanilla album I’ve heard so far this year, if ever. Reminds me a bit of folksy boy band in its harmonizing. Also a lot like Boston favorites Guster [I don’t understand the appeal]. Blind Pilot is on auto pilot and not particularly memorable. Listen if you have trouble sleeping and want whitewashed dreams.
