LISTEN: Stephen Emmer
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on September 25, 2014
International Blue
–a stunning, sprawling cross between John Denver, as strange as that sounds, [“Let the Silence Hold You” and the heartfelt “In the Mirror Reflected”] and Tindersticks [“Blown Away” and “Untouchable”]. Broad, sweeping vocals and dark, luxurious melodies. it’s dreamy, romantic, soothing.
Stephen Emmer is an interesting dude. Born in Holland, he grew up in an Indian ashram learning to play local wind instruments during the ‘60s then learning voodoo-infused percussion in the Caribbean. Back in Amsterdam in the ‘70s, he got involved in various bands such as an experimental free jazz group, a symphonic rock group, and an avant-garde new wave electro-noise group called Minny Pops, who would be signed by the UK’s Factory Records alongside Joy Division.

Bee vs. Moth: music review and tour dates
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on September 10, 2014
Cinematic arrangements. Experimental, creative jazz-pop instrumental. Engulfs you so you’re transported to another place, another time. Dreamy. Simultaneously futuristic and retro. Bee vs. Moth impressively changes tempos, styles and arrangements throughout the album using varied instrumentation including strings, saxes, brass, organ and found percussion. It’s impressive that an instrumental band can be so expressive. No words needed for this sonically superior journey to the umpteenth degree. Turn on, tune in, vibe out. I don’t listen to a lot of instrumental or jazz but I’m a long-time fan of Bee vs. Moth. The music’s en par with Henry Mancini and the Breakfast at Tiffany’s soundtrack. A decade ago, bassist Philip Moody and drummer Sarah Norris started Bee vs. Moth together and the band has since grown into a diverse, rotating cast with ambitious arrangements featured in film and television scores. Shelter in Place is Bee vs. Moth’s third studio release. “It Looked Good in the Showroom” oozes swanky pizzazz. Feel I’m in the midst of a classic film in “Machine Gun Reverie,” black and white and moody. “The Snitch” is funky keys and horns. Then there’s cheery, super jazzed “The Buffet of Knowledge.” Starting with drums and a cool riff, “Problems with Crowds” makes you feel you’re navigating the subways in a trench coat and dark shades. Auralgasm.

New Music Videos: Zola Jesus; Black Moth
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on September 10, 2014
Zola Jesus, “Dangerous Days”
–grand techno-goth, scratchy wistful vocals. love it. filmed outside somewhere among waves and rocks with Nika wearing cool hoodies and long draping outfits. She reminds me a lot of Chelsea Wolfe but with dance-y beats.
forthcoming album TAIGA – out on 7 October 2014.
Black Moth, “Room 13”
–with lead singer Harriet Bevan’s aggressive cool vocals and out-there guitar riffs, this psychedelic-metal band scores with this new track. a dark, feverish video shot in the recently unlocked servants quarters of a 200-year-old haunted mansion.
Condemned To Hope [New Heavy Soungs] will be released September 15.

WMBR Pipeline! at 25 presents 50 Years of Boston Rock
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on September 6, 2014
In the 90s, I was in my 20s and much more familar with the Boston music scene. My favorite 90s Boston bands were MISTLE THRUSH [I think they thanked me on an album] and FUZZY. I dated the lead singer of The Gravel Pit. I loved Orangutang and The Cavedogs. So when I heard that WMBR’s Pipeline! would be putting on all these cool shows for its 25th anniversary I got terribly excited and nostalgic. If you don’t know these bands you’re way too young and too hipster for your own good. Sorry there’s no Tribe show. loved that band too. These bands were and are the Boston music legacy.
I can’t say it better than the press release:
Cambridge, MA (August 3, 2014) ¬- WMBR’s Pipeline! show (airing every Tuesday evening 8:00-10:00 with host Jeff Breeze) today announced the dates, venues, and band line-ups for the 50 Years of Boston Rock festival this fall. These bands from decades past come roaring into the present day, among them: The Remains with their stunning garage beat and The Freeborne rediscovering their psych virtuosity from the ’60s; Reddy Teddy and Willie Alexander & The Boom Boom Band bringing back the pre and proto-punk sounds of the ’70s; Stranglehold, The Dogmatics and the F.U’s delivering early ’80s punk proper and hardcore…and later in the decade O Positive and Big Dipper representing the burgeoning indie-rock scene; Gigolo Aunts, Fuzzy, and the Dirt Merchants nearing the millennium with their ’90s indie-pop/rock brilliance; and finally The Sheila Divine and The Charms, arriving in the 2000s, recasting pop and garage verities into their own thrilling style. This is a half century’s worth of the Boston music underground…and this festival revisits a good chunk of it!
50 Years of Boston Rock takes place from Friday, September 12 – Sunday, October 12 at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, The Middle East downstairs in Cambridge, the Brighton Music Hall, the Regent Theatre in Arlington, and Cuisine en Locale in Somerville, a new ballroom-like space with a capacity of 425. There are current plans to add a 14th night to the series.
