DVD review: Feast of Love

Feast of Love is set in Portland, Oregon where Bradley [Greg Kinnear] owns a coffee shop and ends up being terribly unlucky with love though he wants it more than anything else. Morgan Freeman plays his friend, a writer and the man who looks upon all the goings on with that breezy wisdom he’s perfected. As the film opens, Bradley is at a baseball game with his wife Kathryn [Selma Blair]. She flirts with a woman on the other team and soon enough she leaves him for her. Bradley meets Diana [Radha Mitchell] in his coffee shop. After a rousing sex romp, the two fall for each and marry. She’s carrying on an affair with a married guy. When Bradley finds out, he’s devastated but soon bounces back, meet a woman and gets married again. There’s the young and in love couple, Chloe and Oscar, as well.
There’s no substance to the relationship between Oscar and Chloe. Feast of Love is more like Buffet of Sex. Scene to scene. The film is trying to make sex look like love or it’s pushing these relationships without any real character development. Radha Mitchell does an excellent job. Mitchell’s character explores the idea of monogamy and the complexities of settling down. I used to have a crush on Greg Kinnear but he does do the nice, oblivious guy again and again. Perhaps I’m just way too cynical for this film. I feel I will never find love and I really want sex but want to be in like at least.
DVD review: The Nanny Diaries

How much more silly could this film be? Based on the enjoyable, easy-to-read book, The Nanny Diaries, by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, the film does not provide enough detail, humor or shock-factor to recommend the film over the book. While another popular “loosely based in fact” book at the time, The Devil Wears Prada, successfully unfolded upon the big screen, The Nanny Diaries does not have enough color or emotion to make the audience care. It’s all fluff and silliness.
In the film, Scarlett Johansson [Scoop, The Prestige] plays Annie, a recent college grad and New Jersey-native who walks out on her Goldman Sachs interview and instead takes a job as a nanny. She literally runs into the child, Grayer, in the park. His mother [Mrs. X—played with erect posture and a methodic detachment by the talented Laura Linney], who simply cannot be bothered running after the child, offers her a job. The nonsensical script falls flat. The relationship between the nanny and her charge is non-existent and if there is no connection between these too, why invest in an entire film called The Nanny Diaries? You never believe the attachment between the six-year-old and this nanny. He’s had so many nannies, so why would he bond with this one? Who knows? It’s certainly not made evident through their moments together. A voice-over further insults the viewer. We can see how residents of the Upper East Side act. Just show us. We do not need to hear you describe the nuances that you think we would not normally pick up. Then the film strings together the most contrite and contrived situations possible. The nanny gets exasperated by preparing food for finicky child and gives in by handing him a jar of peanut butter. Oh, and eat it right out of the jar while I keep dipping my finger in and licking it off and putting it back in. Gross. Hysterical moment where the nanny is caught with her pants down. Cute Ivy-league boy to think about. The pair “bond” over his sad, sad story of a dead mother and being sent off to boarding school. And she thought he was spoiled. Silly Annie, the nanny. Of course, the couple’s fighting and the husband’s cheating. The nanny somehow makes the mother understand it is okay to have it all and spend time with her child. It’s all cluttered in this film. The Nanny Diaries falls flat.

DVD review: House of Eliott

House of Eliott: The Complete Series

Beatrice: Evie, you’re unstoppable.
Evie: I think we both are.
In a beautiful packaged set, now you can have the complete collection of the popular British drama from 1991, House of Eliott. It has series one, two and three in lovely casing that fits the decorative and captivating series about two sisters in 1920s London. From the creators of Upstairs/Downstairs, The House of Eliott manages to examine class differences in London through the inner-workings of a design house. It’s done in a lively, dramatic manner. You become invested in all the characters over the course of the series.
We see the wealthy, attractive Eliott sisters who frequent extravagant parties and have elegant friends and then additionally peek into the lives of those who work for the House of Eliott—the seamstresses who toil and worry about money. Both rich and working class have one thing in common: relationship issues.
The two single sisters find themselves without money after their father’s death. 30-year-old Beatrice basically brought up 18-year-old sister and therefore, sacrificed her own goals and future. Both women are strong, independent and creative. Beatrice [Stella Gonet] is the sensible, conservative sister while Evangeline [CSI’s Louise Lombard] is the spirited, inquisitive and adventurous one. The stisters could not be more different but they have that special sibling bond and both have an interest in creating fashion. This makes them work well together. Evangeline [Evie] is the designer/the creative one and Beatrice has the business sense, the ability to see how to make it work. As one character said in the beginning the two sisters were not paid what they were worth. At first the women design clothes according to the interests of their clients but they decide to challenge themselves and create an original collection. During this time, suitors come in and out of their lives, and the women struggle to reach success in a fickle, competitive industry. The costume design, period sets and characters make House of Eliot a must-see.
At the beginning, the Eliott sisters sell their home and Beatrice considers a position as caretaker of an elderly woman. Evie applies for a dance instructor position after learning all the hot moves from the housekeeper. But the women have big dreams and these positions do not suit them. A chance encounter with Evie and a philanthropist Penelope leads to the introduction of Penelopes’ playboy/photographer brother Jack [Aden Gillett]. He ends up hiring Beatrice to work for him and she keeps him completely organized but knows she and Evie want to be involved in the fashion world. They go to work for a woman in her design house. Instead of learning as apprentices, the woman disapproves when Evie garners more attention and requests for designing than she does. After that a big name designer hires the much sought after sisters and ends up stealing Evie’s designs.
The sisters make the daring decision to go into business for themselves with Jack’s monetary support as well as that of Evie’s godfather. Beatrice is the businesswoman while Evie has the eye and the talent to design. The sisters argue over different concepts and plans for their company. They clash over operational and design matters. Evie dates two very different men and this also causes a rift between the two sisters. Beatrice is at that “spinster” age for most in England at her time and Evie is young, beautiful, and inquisitive and attracts many suitors while her sister focuses on work. Evie is dedicated to design though, especially after a tragic event breaks her heart: she travels to art museums and takes in concerts and immerses herself to other cultural activities to gain new ideas for an original collection.
As with any proper and really worthwhile British series, House of Eliott has its bounty of dramatic moments, cliff-hangers, tragedies, scandals and winning episodes to propel it.
Activist Penelope remains conflicted on her friendship with Evie and her relationship with her brother Jack, who has become a partner in House of Elliott: “It makes me so mad. All this care and attention lavished on so much nonsense.” At a charity ball, she stood on-stage and expressed her distain for all its attendants, admonishing them for all the money they spent on their outfits for the event as well as the wasted money she and her organization used to plan and present it. She said that they all should have donated money directly to the organization. As a sub-plot, Penelope’s story provides a view into the other side of wealth: she selflessly and ardently works to help the unfortunate and puts herself in harm’s way time and time again. At the end of series one, she contemplates traveling to Africa with a missionary. Jack moves away from full-time photography to the film industry. He also grows fonder of Beatrice and their relationship moves from platonic to romantic. They make a wonderful pair—although they have their ups and downs. From the first scene he’s in, actor Aden Gillett commands the screen as Jack; a charming, honest, experienced and it turns out, quite sentimental, gorgeous man.
The Eliot sisters attract upper-crust clientele and the business is going very well. As Beatrice, Gonet shows her sensible side but also exhibits a strong sense of self. She’s gone this long without a man to support her and knows she can do it on her own. She loves Jack but does not need Jack. Lombard shines as Evie, a sprite, eager young woman who cannot wait for her next adventure or challenge. They attend lots of parties. Others do not treat them as fairly as they treat their workers and soon money is swindled, an affair with Evie and a diplomat threatens the reputation of House of Eliott and the sisters must make some difficult decisions. Wanting children and a more domestic home life, Jack suggests a separation to Beatrice. She works so much and is so career-focused and he knows it will not change and he does not want her to give up the business which provides her with such self-identity and pride. He is doing rather well with his film business as this point, but he also wants a family and Beatrice is just too involved with the House of Eliott.
The House of Eliott provides viewers with flair, drama, intrigue and an intricate journey for the sisters Eliott to come into their own. At any age, with enough focus, anyone can do what many view as impossible. Beatrice and Evangeline are dedicated and determined to make their way on their own terms and will let very few obstacles or few people lead them astray from accomplishing their ultimate goal: a successful fashion house.
The first season of House of Eliott begins with the two strong sisters supporting one another and the final series ends the same way. House of Eliott shows two very different yet connected women succeeding in a competitive industry, during a complex time in London.
DVD Review: Broken English

It is the story of Nora [formidable, immensely talented Indie Queen Parker Posey], a 35-year-old who seems stuck in a rut—both personally and professionally. Nora has become complacent and settled at her hotel job. She is beginning to delve into the Bell Jar after years of seeming to know what she wanted and now being at the age where she feels she should already be there. Date after date leads to further frustration until she meets a French man, Julien [Melvil Poupaud]. He might really like her or just be another guy leading her on. Is it a merely a charming façade or is he being honest with Nora?
Posey turns out a tour-de-force performance under the direction of Zoe Cassavetes. At times darkly reminiscent of Looking for Mr. Goodbar and steps above Sex and the City type single girl stories, Broken English does not look through rose-colored glasses but tackles Nora’s issues head-on. Her best friend Audrey [a solid performance by Drea de Matteo] is happily married and is supportive, understanding and concerned about her friend. Their conversations and connection are aptly real. Nora’s chemistry with Julien is palpable, enviable and genuine. The film does not gloss over anything from Nora’s morning-after bed head hair to her depressive, insecure moments. Nora and Audrey travel to Paris in hopes of finding Julien and Nora discovers herself, as cliché as that may sound. She lost his number.
In one scene, she is sitting with the French guy who she has spent a few days with and suddenly a look of intense fear washes over her eyes as the color drains from her face and she looks like she’s going to cry, shake and/or explode. It is a heart-pounding portrayal of that wave of anxiety that starts to erupt inside. She bolts out of the café and into her nearby apartment and lunges for the bottle of pills in her medicine cabinet, downs a few and then gets in bed. “I’m okay. I’m not going to kill myself or anything,” Nora says to this guy who has followed her back, confused.
Brilliant actress. She’s one of my favorites. The film is raw, real and honest. Cassavetes’s spot on, direct, honest script captures this woman’s fears, disappointments and frustrations.
DVD Review: The Lookout

Everyone was saying how you woke up this other guy.
–Luvlee [Fisher] to Chris [Gordon-Levitt] about his coma.
Chris Pratt [Gordon-Levitt] seemed to lead the charmed life: star hockey player, pretty girlfriend, popular, family wealth and a number of prospects ahead of him. Now, he lives by lists. People do not expect much of him. And he seems an easy target and you get uneasy when anyone talks to him. Stuck in a mind he did not choose to be in, nor wants to be can be surprising and is often frustrating for Chris. He’s now treated differently. Sometimes he surprises himself and gets frustrated too by his slow verbalization process or the way he blurts things out at times.
Gordon-Levitt expresses a naivety and just the right expression. On the extras, Gordon-Levitt said he intentionally did not get much slept and was really worn out on the set to get in to the mindset of this character. It’s an impressive character study. Fully aware of his shortcomings, the character knows at times how slow and complicated things are and other times is lucent.
Despite wealthy parents he works cleaning floors at the local bank and lives in a shady part of town with his blind friend. Guilt? Some form of self-punishment? Townies befriend him and convince him to collaborate on a scheme to rob the bank; will he go through with it after all. Especially conniving and convincing is Luvlee [played by the effervescent Fisher]. Chris hasn’t received so much attention in a long time. But will he risk it all for the thrill or for the money or the power that it will provide?
The Lookout is a superior psychological thriller.
STEELE RECOMMENDATION: Top of the netflix queue.
