book review: Finding Peace Amid the Chaos

finding peace

Finding Peace Amid the Chaos by Tanya Brown. Publisher: LangMarc Publishing (March 2014). Nonfiction. Memoir. paperback. 248 pages. ISBN 978-1-880292-49-5.

“As I eyed the pills, the significant losses in my life that brought me to that rock-bottom pit clicked on, playing slowly and nostalgically in my mind like an old, crackling silent film. I could see Nicole’s beautiful shining face smiling at me, but that was immediately wiped out by the blood at the crime scene, the funeral, the tabloids, the helicopters hovering over our home.”

Part-memoir, part self-help book, Tanya Brown chronicles her mental breakdown a decade after her sister Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder. It’s been 20 years this week since Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder and the OJ Simpson white SUV chase broadcast on CNN. Tanya (at least a decade younger than Nicole) internalized her pain and mental illness until she had a major outburst and took too many pills. I’m not fond of the book’s subtitle: My Escape from Depression and Suicide. There’s really no escape. It takes maintenance, patience and hard work when you have depression or another mental illness.

There’s a reason for the stigma associated with depression and mental illness. There IS no cure. Instead one learns tools to cope, tools to interact with others and tools to survive. Medication may or may not play a part in one’s stability. As someone who personally struggles with depression, I can relate in many ways to Brown. She initially says that she’s not addressing OJ in this book but then spends quite a bit of time on OJ or the trial and her thoughts on him. How can she avoid it? Now a life coach, Brown utilizes the book’s second half to provide tips for others. Clearly Brown studied psychology. She provides exceptional definitions of key psychiatric terms such as breakdown point, meditation and triggers.

Brown’s useful tools to maintain one’s mental health and ideally prevent further issues are worth reading. Anyone who’s been in a partial program or behavioral health program will recognize them. She suggests scheduling everything down to the smallest thing and checking each task off as you accomplish it. She reminds us to remain present. Mindfulness is a key concept for depression. Remain in today, in the now and don’t focus your attentions on the bad events in your past. Brown implores people to break away from negatives, express feelings [avoid the bottle up that could lead to a blow-out and breakdown], commend yourself, pay attention to nutrition and be sure to exercise. She also addresses identifying and managing your thoughts via a mood journal or daily journaling. All these tips take time to work in to your lifestyle. Brown shares some of her methods with readers. For example she avoids driving with the radio on and takes nearly daily walks with her mom. In the epilogue she provides contact information to book her as a speaker or to hire her as a life coach (a bit unusual for a memoir). Worth reading although a bit rough around the edges despite being written with a co-writer.

On the breaking point:

“Each of us has a mental breaking point. It’s that undignified moment caused by the overwhelming stress and aggravation of a volatile situation, when we finally wreak emotional havoc on those around us.”

On holding her feelings in:

“I, on the other hand, bottled up everything, kept my opinions to myself, and stayed in the background as I felt everybody wanted me to do. I worried more about pretending to be happy instead of taking care of me. Our polar opposite ways of dealing with the loss of Nicole eventually came to a head.”

Advice from Nicole:

“Delete the need to understand. We don’t need to understand everything. Some things just are.”

On meditation:

“Meditation, misunderstood by many who don’t do it, can be sitting in silence, meditating on scripture, doing yoga, listening to a guided imagery CD, or doing some deep breathing. It is something you do by yourself that puts you in a state of calmness, a space of solitude and peace. It’s a place where answers come to you because your mind is still, quiet, and calm. It’s a surefire way to shut out the technological distractions of the world and focus.”

RATING: ***/5

book review: Fallout

fallout

Fallout by Sadie Jones. Publisher: Harper (April 2014). Historical fiction. Hardcover. 416 pages. ISBN: 9780062292810.

This book. I fell in love with its characters and its premise immediately. A group of 20-somethings entangled in love affairs and the London theatre during the 1970s.

Fallout revolves around Luke Kanowski, a young man with a mother living in a mental institution and a a former Polish POW father who remained in England after the war. Both parents rely tremendously on Luke. Living in a rustic northern town, Luke escapes the familial strain and dead-end choices through a passion for theatre. He reads everything and remains updated on all theatrical goings on. One night he meets aspiring producer Paul Driscoll and theater student Leigh Radley who will influence his future in myriad ways.

Years later Luke decides to move to London to escape provincialism and pursue his dreams. Luke becomes housemates with Leigh and Paul. Leigh sustains an unrequited attraction for Luke but ends up settling with Paul. Working as a stage manager, Leigh manages to earn the most consistent income. Eventually the trio forms a theatre company where Luke falls for the dazzling married Nina Jacobs. She’s married to influential and manipulative producer Tony Moore. Luke and Nina start an affair but she’s reluctant to leave Tony despite his abusive nature.

When their theatre company fails, Luke moves out to his own place and one of his plays garners attention and a bidding war. He’s so attached to Nina that he wants her to star in it although she doesn’t possess the talent required for the role. Paul starts a new production company with a woman from New York. Drama ensues for everyone. Whether you know a ton about the theater or are an occasional theater-goer Fallout proves a fascinating read. Author Sadie Jones describes the challenges, the competiveness, the fleeting nature, insecurities and exhilarations for those involved.

Jones uses colorful imageries to craft this spectacular novel that captures the mindset and challenges these young men and women face. You’re taken into the wings, the dressing rooms, behind the sets and into the production stages—writing, directing and producing a play. Jones creates realistic and complex relationships these four people manage while navigating the competitive theatrical world. It’s a charming, clever novel in which you’ll become immensely engulfed.

Shiva Rea Meditations: DVD review

Shiva_Rea_Meditations_product

When I first took a yoga class 20 years ago, I didn’t like Shavasana at the end. It took some time before I could settle in and breathe into the quiet mediation that typically closes any yoga workout. The teachers didn’t make me feel safe. I’ve tried several yoga DVDs and Shiva Rea’s the best. A marvelous guide and inspirational yogini. I’m a fan and often use her wonderful DVDs.

Renowned yoga teacher and flow expert Rea collected her various mediations on one DVD. Settings include the Greek island of Santorini and New Mexico’s White Sands National Park. Meditations from previously released programs such as Daily Energy, Fluid Power, A.M. Energy, Yoga Trance Dance, Radiant Heart Yoga, Yogini and Yoga in Greece. Shiva Rea guides you through each meditation and scenic settings boost the mood.

Whether you want to perk up, cool down or completely bliss out you’re covered here. Use the cool and uncomplicated matrix to improve your overall health by increasing blood flow via solar, lunar, Shavasana, heart opening, mantra and mudra (hand gestures) options. Rea’s unique flow style might feel strange at first but is completely liberating and opens you up.

book review: The Art of Neil Gaiman

art of neil gaiman

The Art of Neil Gaiman by Hayley Campbell. Publisher: Harper Design (May 2014). Hardcover. 320 pages. ISBN 9780062248565.

“A cult author is known to relatively few people yet loved by those few with a rabid eagerness. You get that from Gaiman fans, but they are not few, and they are everywhere.” –Hayley Campbell

Mostly for the Neil Gaiman fans or the ultra-curious, The Art of Neil Gaiman provides never-before-seen illustrations, notes and photographs in one coffee-table sized book. It’s a dense, detailed chronicling of Gaiman’s journey from journalist to comics artist to cult novelist. Hayley Campbell knows Neil Gaiman quite well. The daughter of comic book author Eddie Campbell, Australian-born/London-based author Campbell met Gaiman at age seven and they have a godfather/goddaughter-type relationship [their description]. Interviewing someone you’ve known for decades isn’t easy although you’re generally provided unequivocal access and trust.

“You know, I have a bit of an idea about aging and time, and I really should do something with it—stick it in a story or something—because it really is kind of good. When you’re a kid you see adults as adults, you don’t see them as people who used to be kids. They are an age, and they have always been that age.” –Neil Gaiman

The book includes these chapters: prelude; British comics; vertigo heights; a comics miscellany; beyond comics; silver screens; reflections. One of Gaiman’s early projects? He wrote a Duran Duran biography. He did it for the financial compensation and the other choices weren’t that enticing to him. In 2007 while writing The Graveyard Book, Gaiman took a research trip to Highgate Cemetery with author Audrey Niffenegger who’d been working there as a tour guide while writing Her Fearful Symmetry. In his notebook he wrote down unusual Victorian names he found on old tombstones. There’s the poem “For Amanda, an appreciation” he wrote for partner Amanda Palmer which includes the lines: “For Secondly she moves like cats and panthers and also she can stand still” and “For Ninthly there is no-one like her. Not that I’ve ever met, and I have met so many people. No-one at all.”

Copious minutiae about every Gaiman project packed within this book’s pages if that sort of thing interests you. Niche audience targeted. It’s a bit jumbled and crammed and the layout should be better for a design/art book.
