Shiva Rea Meditations: DVD review

Shiva_Rea_Meditations_product

When I first took a yoga class 20 years ago, I didn’t like Shavasana at the end. It took some time before I could settle in and breathe into the quiet mediation that typically closes any yoga workout. The teachers didn’t make me feel safe. I’ve tried several yoga DVDs and Shiva Rea’s the best. A marvelous guide and inspirational yogini. I’m a fan and often use her wonderful DVDs.

Renowned yoga teacher and flow expert Rea collected her various mediations on one DVD. Settings include the Greek island of Santorini and New Mexico’s White Sands National Park. Meditations from previously released programs such as Daily Energy, Fluid Power, A.M. Energy, Yoga Trance Dance, Radiant Heart Yoga, Yogini and Yoga in Greece. Shiva Rea guides you through each meditation and scenic settings boost the mood.

Whether you want to perk up, cool down or completely bliss out you’re covered here. Use the cool and uncomplicated matrix to improve your overall health by increasing blood flow via solar, lunar, Shavasana, heart opening, mantra and mudra (hand gestures) options. Rea’s unique flow style might feel strange at first but is completely liberating and opens you up.

Shiva Rea A.M. Energy: DVD review

Run Time: 71 minutes
MPAA: not rated
DVD Release Date: April 5, 2011
Studio: Acacia

A.M. Energy is an extremely challenging workout that incorporates Shiva Rea’s flow style, core strengthening and balance poses depending on the modules you choose. Shiva Rea might take a bit of getting used to at first but her techniques work. You’ll build core strength and open joints and lengthen muscles through her sessions. Shiva Rea has a soothing voice, a perfect yoga body and all of her practices have excellent pacing and a variety of poses.

There are three 20-minute practices—Body Mandala, Viva Flow and Shakti Flow– and a bonus 20-minute Heart Salutation on A.M. Energy. Start out with Meditation Core awakening and then you can choose any of the different modules. In the Body Mandala, Shiva Rea incorporates circular patterns with the body so all the movements are very fluid and concentric. Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “circle”. In the Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions, artwork often takes a mandala form. I felt this set practice opened up my joints and charged my circulatory system. Shakti Flow energizes and increases flexibility and joint opening through flowing movements. Viva Flow includes tons of balancing poses to challenge our bodies as well as mental concentration. As with all of her DVDs, Shiva Rea starts with the basic balance pose and then shows poses with greater difficulty so that the DVD will suit a yoga practitioner of any level of ability.

DVD review: Shiva Rea: Yogini

Shiva Rea’s DVDs are all wonderful. I’m partial to Shiva Rea: Daily Energy which offers fire, earth and water selections in the matrix. When I first did some of Shiva’s routines I felt silly. She’s such an organic/earthy-crunchy California yogi. But the fluidness of Vinyasa is marvelous.

Yogini is completely geared toward women and Shiva encourages us to “spread love” through the body in the Healing Meditation warm-up. She also speaks about recognizing “peace, compassion, beauty and love”—all wonderful thoughts. there’s the Flow of Love—Backbending Vinyasa. Flow of Beauty: Fluid Backbending Vinyasa. I chose this one because I’m a fan of Shiva’s fluid movements. I don’t have the best back due to some protruding discs and degenerative disc disease and it feels great to open up my back and hips with her flowing style. I then did the Flow of Empowerment: Standing Pose Vinyasa. In this module, Shiva goes through some of the standard warrior poses. The goal of Yogini according to Shiva Rea is to tap into shakti or dynamic energy.

Wife and husband trainer team Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito have developed this DVD which targets the entire upper body. The exercises are based on the duo’s popular Core Fusion and Core Fusion Sport classes that attract Heidi Klum, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, Mario Lopez and Kate Hudson, among others. The program has been segmented into five ten minute sessions: Upper Body Weights; Upper Body; Abdominals; Abdominal Curl with Leg Variations and Upper Body, Back, and Hip Stretches. It is sure to easily fit any schedule.

Elisabeth is great. Fred is a bit dry. The exercises really target the core and this team knows its stuff. That is clear from doing several of the routines. It’s a fantastic workout to do daily: just pick one each day for ten minutes. My friend and I did both ab workouts and the Upper Body, Back and Hip Stretches and could definitely feel the burn. This is one DVD worth investing in.

Bollywood films have always been popular throughout the world. Slumdog Millionaire has really only brought the music to the United States and also the dance number nod to Bollywood films at its ending. Hemalayaa, a Bollywood fitness star, features two new workouts on Bollywood Dance Blast. Each workout [Removing Obstacles and Celebrate!] is a 20-minute cardio routine.

The Indian music provides a grooving background beat and Hemalayaa has plenty of energy. Many of her moves are similar to basic aerobics set to Indian music. I wanted more Bollywood infuesed into it and that was disappointing that it was not. It still gets your heart pumping and is a fun work out. When Hemalayaa started to focus on hip movement: openers and rotations, I enjoyed that and felt I worked parts of my body I might not otherwise concentrate on. It definitely felt good. She talks of getting rid of “biodegradable and compostable waste” (bad energy) and then put on “sexy spiritual boots” to stomp it back into the earth. Bollywood Dance Blast definitely will add variety to your work out routine.

Shiva Rea’s latest DVD features seven 20-minute practices—one for each day of the week. There are six pre-set practices and there’s also a customizable Yoga Matrix where users can combine segments [I’ve used this feature on another Shiva Rea DVD and it is fantastic. You are left with endless opportunities for workouts. What YOU want to do]. Shiva Rea might take a bit of getting used to at first but her techniques work. You’ll feel looser, much more relaxed and lengthened after completing one of her sessions. And that’s the whole point of yoga isn’t it? Shiva Rea has a soothing voice, a perfect yoga body and expert poses. All her practices have excellent pacing and a variety of poses. After the workout I chose, I felt looser muscles, opened joints, and overall calmness. Shiva Rea: Daily Energy Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a must for your DVD workout collection.

20-minute Practices: Earth, Shanti, Heart-Air, Fire &Water, Water, Fire and Chakra Namaskar
Extra Segments: Solar Meditation, Lunar Meditation, Core, Forward Bends, and Shavasana
