music review: Mishka Shubaly

PRESS SHOT_MISHKA SHUBALY

Known as Amazon’s most frequently published Kindle Singles author, Miksha Shubaly can boast four bestsellers: a first-hand account of a disaster at sea, “Shipwrecked;” a mini-memoir detailing Shubaly’s transition from “drunk-and-drugged gutter dweller to sober ultra-marathoner “ called “The Long Run;” a true tale of online love gone wrong, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and “Bachelor Number One” about reality TV.

mishkashubaly_cowardspath_coverart

The third full-length album Coward’s Path [In Music We Trust] from Shubaly features dark, bittersweet songs and a wondrously layered journey through the depths of Shubaly’s psyche. It’s the perfect antidote to the forced fuzzy warmth and overindulgence of Valentine’s Day. He’s a superb wordsmith writing dark, bittersweet, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes brooding songs. The music and vox sound like The Pogues, Pavement and Lou Reed mixed together.

“Frankenstein Heart” is a bold and super-charged biting song about the devastation from years of drug abuse. “Taxes and Jail” is a detached, amusing anti-love song –“you won’t hear from me you’re beautiful/ because it’s your insecurity that keeps you around/ because baby you can always depend on me when you need someone to let you down.” Propelled by a grooving beat, “I Can’t Remember When You Were Mine” includes lines like “boxes and boxes of unlabeled crap/ if I die now they will never get unpacked” sung with deep dissonance. Dramatic, expansive string arrangements make “Ohio” a gloomy treasure. This might be another go-to for me on moody days.

“The title refers to a time in my life where I took the path of least resistance to the end of the line,” explains Shubaly. “In one of the first copyrighted blues songs from 1912, Lee Roy White says ‘the blues ain’t nothing but a good man feeling bad.’ Coward’s Path is the sound of a bad man feeling bad.”

music review: Michelle Chamuel

face the music

This sounds like an early Mandy Moore album. Bubble gum pop. Sunny and sweet. I remember Michelle Chamuel on Season 4 of The Voice resplendent in awkwardness and cool quirkiness. In fact in her interview before the blind auditions she stated: “I think I represent nerdy people. People misunderstand me sometimes because as an introvert, people have thought I was aloof.” I wish there was much more of that here. Is she trying too hard to be a hit-maker? I don’t watch much of The Voice but sometimes check out the blind auditions. Instead I feel whoever worked with her pushed her to do things she might not have chosen to do. In one round on The Voice she does a heartfelt and stunning stripped-down version of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know.” Keane is one of my favorite British bands. The band creates sublime melodies and impressive arrangements. On her debut Face the Fire I’d prefer a bit more edge and strange rather than such a polished final product.

Title track “Face the Fire” is all glossiness and dance-able beat. Starts out promising but quickly veers toward over-produced. “Golden” slows down and showcases Chamuel’s vocal range as she flickers up and down on the chorus. There’s the cheerful “Rock Out” with its super infectious beat and sugary, optimistic chorus: “do what you do/ say what you do/ you better rock it your own way.” Pure bubblegum “Made for Me” boasts kicky electro-beat and whispery vocals. “Money” features Katy Perry-like melodies and honeyed vocals. It’s okay but in the end nothing stands out. There’s nothing novel on this album. Nothing that’s not been done or heard before. It’s a collection of extremely upbeat songs that seep into one another.

NEW MUSIC: Grand Lake Islands; Torres; Zola Jesus; You Blew It!

Grand Lake Islands, “Monterey”

Quite the soothing throwback song. very 70s harmonies and gentle guitar-rock, a bit twangy, definitely melodic and mellow. Erik Emanuelson started this project several years ago in New York while working as an English teacher. Released an EP and decided to quit the day job and move to Portland. Wonder if he just saved all his money or if he still occasionally subsitute teaches. It’s truly rare one can quit the day job these days to pursue a music career. He met Evan Krogh (Guitar/lap Steel), Kyle Hartlet (Bass), and Bob Reynolds (Drums).

Song From Far [Good Mountain Records] LP out now !

Torres, “Strange Hellos”

beautiful, raw, haunting new song. echos of PJ Harvey. It was produced by Rob Ellis (known for his work with PJ Harvey), with a backing band featuring Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley and PJ Harvey’s bassist Ian Oliver.

Sprinter [Partisan Records] out May 5, 2015.

Zola Jesus, “Hunger”

upbeat, unrestrained, invigorating song with powerful vocals. Club beats ready to get that heart pumping. Taiga [Mute] out now.

You Blew It!, “Bedside Manor”

keeping emo alive. kicking in with murky guitar and yearning vox.

STEELE INTERVIEWS: Esthema

Esthema (source: band website)

Esthema (source: band website)

On June 3, 2014 Esthema released their third CD, Long Goodbye–beautiful, layered, semi-dark with unusual instrumentation and Middle Eastern elements. I don’t listen to a ton of jazz or progressive instrumental music [I do love Bee vs. Moth.] but when I do it must grab me in some manner. With Long Goodbye, I become engulfed in its sad prettiness.

Esthema-longgoodbye

Esthema are: Andy Milas [guitar]; Onur Dilisen [violin]; Mac Ritchey [oud and bouzouki]; Naseem Alatrash [cello]; Tom Martin [bass] and George Lernis [drums and percussion].

With the goal to compose songs on his own, Andy Milas formed the band in 2006. He’s first-generation Greek, born in Boston. He loves Greek music and wanted to incorporate that into other styles of music. He said he wanted to include elements of jazz, rock and classical. Onur, a native of Turkey, has been with Andy from the start. His mom was a music teacher. Onur is a classically trained violinist and graduate of Boston Conservatory. He started learning Turkish music.

WMBR has played songs from the latest release on a program called “New Edge.” The band hopes to put together a video soon to attract more varied attention. The band dislikes Spotify. If you’re into the 90s site MySpace, they’re there. First band in the past seven years I’ve seen on MySpace. I wonder how much money they make when you listen to a song on MySpace. Esthema is a Greek name that means feeling/emotion.

I sat down with Andy and Onur recently at Diesel Café in Somerville.

Amy Steele: What do you think attracts people to instrumental music?

Andy: People have to interpret the music. Lyrics sometimes make it obvious. [There’s an] attraction to instrumental music. This sets a mood that music with lyrics doesn’t.

I played them a few songs from Bee vs. Moth and they weren’t impressed. I think Bee vs. Moth is superb in soundtracks, memorable music, emotive instrumental music. Bee vs. Moth possess an enviable swagger. Maybe the use of horns, which they noted, makes it less serious compared to their compositions. Bee vs. Moth are successful in what they do and tour across the United States. I’m just a music critic. I am not classically trained nor can I play any instruments.

Amy Steele: What are the challenges in establishing a fan base in Boston area?

Andy: Boston is not inviting to instrumental music, world fusion, acoustic in this area and we need to keep up with the bar crowd.

Amy Steele: What makes Esthema stand out?

Onur: Sincerity. We play honestly and with pure intentions. Gentlemen and with a good heart.

Andy: Everyone comes from different backgrounds but we always connect with music. Esthema is a microcosm of the world.

Amy Steele: What’s the live show like?

Andy: There are improvisational moments—we’re always working with arrangements and will take liberties live. It’s an organic experience.

Amy Steele: What makes a good song?

Andy: We have compositions not songs. It’s about satisfaction for the player and the audience. Whenever we think we like it a lot when we play it live it works.

Onur: We have a good idea of what we do and what we like.

Amy Steele: What are your goals for Esthema?

Andy: We need to find an audience where enough people take us seriously.

Onur: This music deserves it. There are very cinematic elements.

Andy: We take ourselves seriously so it’s hard to be considered fun.

[And that’s in the light sense for video or marketing purposes. But serious bands need not be penalized and expected to do things, create something that doesn’t represent them.]

Esthema will perform January 29, 2015 at Ryles in Inman Square Cambridge. 8:00pm and 18+. Tickets are $10.00.
