new music: John Cale; Unknown Mortal Orchestra; Marrow

John Cale, “Close Watch”

–1982’s futuristic sound fits right in today. It’s moody and gorgeous with its clangy and hypnotic beats. M:FANS [Double Six / Domino] is a new reworking of one of John Cale’s most unique solo records, 1982’s Music For A New Society. It will be released on January 22, 2016.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, “Necessary Evil”

Funky track and cool video by Unknown Mortal Orchestra that first appeared as a short film on Adult Swim’s Facebook page and its website. It’s from the band’s record Multi-Love (Jagjaguwar). Illustrated and directed by Sean Solomon (Lucas Bros. Moving Co.), the video will also air nationally on Adult Swim during their “Toonami” block on Saturday, November 21st! Solomon said this about his video for “Necessary Evil”: “The video is an abstract love story about two characters whose insecurities and paranoia eventually drive them apart. I tried to show both character’s perspectives using elements from the lyrics. I had a team of amazing animators and friends.”

Unknown Mortal Orchestra describes their sound as depression funk and psychedelic R&B and I that fits. Plenty of swoops and dips and unexpected beats.

Marrow, “Fool”

If you like Wilco, you’ll like Marrow’s guitar folk. Except there’s female aching vocals to go along with the cool guitar. Vocalist/keyboardist Macie Stewart’s voice has an earthy, jazzy essence. The band’s latest album The Gold Standard [Foxhall Records] is out now.

new music: Tindersticks

Tindersticks, “Hey Lucinda”

I’ve long adored this band. It’s no secret that I gravitate toward darker music even though I love Brit Pop and followed Jesus Jones and The Charlatans UK on tour during the 90s. Tindersticks plays sexy, dark music. Singer Stuart Staples oozes romance with that brooding baritone and the varied instrumentation of violin, keyboards, percussion and guitar leads to gorgeous layered arrangements. Tinderstickswill release The Waiting Room [City Slang] on January 22nd. It’s a collaborative film project as well with each song on the album accompanied by a short film. Tindersticks created soundtracks for several Claire Denis films. The new album features guest appearances by Jehnny Beth of Savages and the late singer Lhasa De Sela.

Tindersticks formed in Nottingham, England in 1992 by Stuart Staples [vocalist], David Boulter [keyboardist], Neil Fraser [guitarist], Dickon Hinchcliffe [violinist], Mark Colwill [bassist] and Al Macaulay [drummer]. Staples, Boulter and Fraser remain in the current line-up.

“Hey Lucinda,” features the vocals of Lhasa De Sela and Rosie Pedlow and Joe King directed the short film.

“We are Dreamers” features a haunting and roiling melody. Jehnny Beth of Savages duets with Stuart Staples. Brazilian director Gabriel Sanna directed the short film.

Meditative, melancholy and gorgeous in its intricacies and arrangements. Ex-Death Cab for Cutie founder Chris Walla released an instrumental album– analog loop-based recording– Tape Loops [Trans Records] in October 2015.

new music: Gold Class; Israel Nash; Woozy

Gold Class, “Bite Down”

lead singer Adam Curley is sexy standing there in t-shirt and jeans, singing with that rippling deep vibrato. The Aussie band sounds  Joy Division-esque with its moody pop/rock melodies. Lucious.

Gold Class released debut album It’s You in September 2015.

Israel Nash, “Strangers”

this reminds me of Neil Young. I know that’s a tough comparison but  Nash’s vocals truly have a weathered texture. inspired by psychedelia and Texas landscapes, Nash’s thoughtful songwriting makes this compelling and entrancing.

Israel Nash’s Silver Seasons [Loose/Thirty Tigers] out now.

Israel Nash plays Great Scott in Boston, Mass. on Thursday, October 23, 2015.

Woozy, “Venom”

unexpectedly cool blend of loud and soft, harsh and gentle, rumbling and smooth. a bit post-punk, art rock, garage rock and all indie rock. think Pavement colliding with The Bird and the Bee. The New Orleans trio succeeds in myriad ways.

Woozy is:
John St. Cyr [guitar/vocals]

Kara Stafford [guitar/vocals]

Ian Paine-Jesam [drums]
