show preview: Screaming Females at ONCE Somerville on Saturday, July 7

screamales+promo+-+color+-+skeiky-5_Crop

if you’re looking to rock out this holiday weekend, indie punk trio Screaming Females will be playing in Somerville in support of their seventh studio album, All at Once, which came out earlier this year. The New Jersey band worked with producer Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Mastodon) and modeled the album after a salon-style gallery show. They wanted the new album to capture the spontaneity and energy of one of their live shows.

Drummer Jarrett Dogherty said: “When you’ve been a band for 12 or 13 years, the resources can dry up and you just go back to what feels comfortable. The other option is that you develop stuff that a younger band would not have been able to do.”

$15, Saturday, July 7, 8:30 p.m., ONCE Lounge and Ballroom, 160 Highland Avenue, Somerville, https://www.oncesomerville.com/.

on tour: Dropkick Murphys

dropkick-murphys

in support of the band’s ninth album, 11 Short Stories Of Pain & GloryDropkick Murphys  kick off its tour tonight in Bethlehem, Penn. before finally shipping up to Boston to play a series of hometown dates.

Celtic-American punk band Dropkick Murphys have become ambassadors for Boston. Since forming in 1996, the band has sold  4 million albums worldwide with 2005’s The Warrior’s Code achieving an RIAA Gold certification and the single “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” nearing double platinum and appearing during a key moment of Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning The Departed. Most recently, 2013’s Signed And Sealed In Blood netted their second consecutive Top 10 debut on the Billboard Top 200, and debuted at number 6 in Germany. They updated the Boston Red Sox anthem “Tessie” in 2004. The band created The Claddagh Fund in 2009 to help support addiction recovery as well as children’s and veterans’ organizations.

On the new album, the song “4-15-13” pays homage to the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing. “Since that day, we felt like not taking the challenge to write a song about what we all went through would be taking the coward’s way out,” bassist Ken Casey reflects. “We put more importance on writing that piece of music than anything we’ve ever done, because if you’re going to touch that day, it has to be done right. We went through so many emotions with that whole experience, as did everyone in Boston. It changed the city forever.” The song “Rebels With A Cause” was written about kids who are given up on, and left behind by a system that has written them off as hopeless. “Paying My Way” is about the way up and out of addiction and the dream of bigger and better things in life.

music preview: Perfect Pussy at Middle East on Wednesday, December 16

Perfect-Pussy-Band-Pic-2014-620x350

There isn’t a much better band name out there right now than Perfect Pussy. If there’s a cool reasonably-priced t-shirt I’m absolutely buying one. Being a female music critic I tend to avoid white male music critics as much as possible but on occasion I’ll read Rolling Stone or Pitchfork or NME listen to NPR’s All Songs Considered. Last year the guys on All Songs Considered RAVED about Perfect Pussy, a punk riot grrl-ish band out of Syracuse New York. The music’s fierce, fast and furious. The lyrics bold and feminist. Just as punk should be.

Perfect Pussy is:

Meredith Graves (vocals)

Ray McAndrew (guitar)

Garrett Koloski (drums)

Greg Ambler (bass)

Shaun Sutkus (synths)

Perfect Pussy plays The Middle East Nightclub Upstairs on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Doors at 8pm.
