NEW VIDEO: K. Flay

Directed by Directed by Clara Aranovich, “Not in California” is the latest video from K. Flay’s new album No Solutions. It’s part of the Solutions Trilogy and is a prequel to the “Bad Vibes.” The song focuses on climate change. K. Flay said: “We’re looking out at a world that is getting hotter and scarier by the day, and still nothing seems to compel the government to take action. The video imagines a trash universe in which social isolation and littering and bad policing are the status quo — a universe that doesn’t feel so different from ours now.”
K. Flay (Katherine Flaherty) attended Stanford University where she studied sociology and psychology. The singer/songwriter and rapper was nominated for two Grammy Awards last year– for Best Rock Song for “In the Cut” and Best Engineered Album for Every Where is Some Where.
K. Flay continues her U.S. tour with a stop in Boston on Wednesday, September 25, 2019.

singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe says that her new song “American Darkness” is an “expression of freedom and beautiful humans being themselves.” She explains: “It began as a sort of homage to a scene in the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia, where the characters are singing along to the Aimee Mann song “Wise Up,” but I wanted our version to be explored through the lens of The Tarot. I’ve been reading tarot cards for myself for many years, and researching the symbolic expressions of the cards for this video made me want to dive even deeper. To represent that, I played both The Fool and The High Priestess cards in the video, to embody both the beginning of the journey, and the realization that the sacred knowledge I was seeking was inside me all along. We cast friends to play a few other tarot archetypes, and Karlos’ idea was to bring the symbols and signifiers into the contemporary; deconstructed, and made everyday – “the magical and the unexceptional.” I loved that. At the same time, we really wanted to challenge the binary of the traditional tarot cards, and give them more diversity, which is something important that many cool artists and witches are doing. I’m such a fan of Karlos Rene Ayala as a writer, director, documentarian and friend, and have looked forward to making a video with him for a long time.”
Wolfe’s new album, Birth of Violence, will be released on September 13, 2019.

new album and tour dates: Chelsea Wolfe

Chelsea Wolfe will release a new album Birth of Violence on September 13, 2019. She’s one of favorite musicians. She writes amazingly beautiful, meaningful, dark and gorgeous songs. She recorded the album in solitude at her home in Northern California. The singer-songwriter said: “I’ve been in a state of constant motion for the past eight years or so; touring, moving, playing new stages, exploring new places and meeting new people-an incredible time of learning and growing as a musician and performer. But after awhile, I was beginning to lose a part of myself. I needed to take some time away from the road to get my head straight, to learn to take better care of myself, and to write and record as much as I can while I have ‘Mercury in my hands,’ as a wise friend put it.”

new music: Fiona Grey; The Drums

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Fiona Grey explained the new song: “There is a lot about living in a pop culture centered world that we deem as ‘normal behavior’. I hope that the music can remind the listener that this follower-centric, alternate persona universe we live in is all temporary happiness.” She has a beautiful voice and the song makes a powerful statement. The EP Cult Classic is out now.
About The Drums dreamy and contemplative new pop song, Jonny Pierce said: “I’m a big believer in making yourself vulnerable in personal relationships, and keeping your guard down. This song talks about how I sometimes make myself fully emotionally available to people who can’t reciprocate because of their own insecurities, and the frustration that ensues … This song is my tongue-in-cheek exploration of those ideas – being kind, not taking shit from anyone, and learning to hold people accountable for their own choices, while still holding some empathy for them.” The Drums fifth album Brutalism is out April 5, 2019. They’re on tour this spring.

Isla Craig , “Love Song”
–a gorgeous, meditative song with ethereal vocals and varied instrumentation with organ, saxophone, bass and synth. It’s a dreamy eclectic soundscape, a genuine auditory treat. I’m looking forward to hearing the entire album from the Toronto-based multi-dimensional vocalist and songwriter.
The Becoming, the third album from Isla Craig, will be released on June 22, 2018 on Pleasence Records.

“Sugar Still Melts in the Rain,” Sarah Mary Chadwick
–if you like Amanda Palmer, you probably like Australian visual artist and songwriter Sarah Mary Chadwick. It’s a beautiful altfolk song with sparse piano and bold speak-singing which conveys heartbreak and emotional depth—“I float here on a cloud of pain but I would do it all again.” Sugar Still Melts in the Rain [Sinderlyn] is due out May 11, 2018.
“Rounded Sound,” Roxy Rawson
–Bay area artist and classically trained musician Roxy Rawson impressively fuses varied elements and vocal stylings for an artistic, eclectic result. She studied violin and piano at University of Paris VIII. Rawson’s vocals remind me a bit of St. Vincent. Her full-length album Quenching the Kill is out March 23, 2018.

Totally Mild, “Lucky Stars”
such a pretty, heartfelt acoustic song from Totally Mild. It’s vulnerable and melancholic. The theatrical, stark tone makes it particularly powerful and memorable. The Melbourne, Australia band’s sophomore album, Her [Chapter Records], will be released February 23, 2018. The band has toured with Real Estate, Kurt Vile, Best Coast, DIIV and The Chills and will perform at SXSW in 2018.
