music news: Lloyd Cole at City Winery on November 15, 2017

lloyd cole photo by doug seymour

Hey if you have middle-aged nostalgia, there are plenty of good shows! UK native Lloyd Cole will be in Boston on November 15, 2017 for an acoustic set at City Winery for his Retrospective Tour. New venue and should be an excellent setting. I ‘m most familiar with Lloyd Cole for his solo work from the 90s– he released an eponymous album in 1990 and Don’t Get Weird on Me Babe in 1991 and Bad Vibes in 1993. Revisiting. It’s solid. Brooding, assured. Bit of glamrock/Britpop elements combined with folk style. Although I didn’t remain tapped in on The Easthampton, Mass.-based musician’s career throughout the years, he’s not stopped regularly putting out music. I really like the song “Women’s Studies” which came out on Standards in 2013.

$22-26, Wednesday, November 15, 8 p.m., City Winery Boston, 1 Canal Street,  Boston, citywinery.com.

Fronted by The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, CRX melds impressive guitar riffs and power pop elements for high energy songs. Valensi’s vocals sound clear, self-assured and relaxed. On creating CRX, Valensi explained: “The Strokes don’t play that often anymore, and when we do it’s awesome, but it got to the point where I needed to balance that out with a project I could take on tour whenever I wanted to. And the idea of playing clubs again was really exciting to me.”

CRX is: Nick Valensi [guitar and vocals]; bassist Jon Safley; keyboardist/vocalist Richie Follin; drummer Ralph Alexander and guitarist Darian Zahedi.

The band’s debut album New Skin [Columbia Records] – produced by Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme – is out now.

Fitz and the Tantrums released a video for the infectious, upbeat single “Hand Clap.” It’s from the band’s self-titled album that came out during the summer. Of the song, Fitz said:  “I was searching for something that felt visceral and edgy. As soon as that moment happened, I was relieved. It felt like the compass — that theme of letting go and losing control — had been set. And it found its way into the rest of the album.” Fitz and the Tantrums formed in 2008. The Los Angeles indie pop band released Pickin’ Up the Pieces in 2010 and More Than Just a Dream in 2013.

jaw-gems

based in Portland, Maine, Jaw Gems creates dance trance beats and grooves with a soothing, hypnotic vibe. On its Facebook page the group describes its genre as drip hop / ratchet jazz. Fitting. Formed in 2009, the experimental music collective started out with vintage synthesizers, a drummer, and an electric bassist and more recently [for those EDM-philes out there] added in Roland sp404 and the Juno 106 Analog Synth. New album Heatweaver [1320 Records] out now.

music preview: DCTV at O’Brien’s Allston on Sunday, April 17

DCTV

French musician and singer Lola G met screenwriter/guitarist James Greer at a Hollywood party three years ago. They began talking about music and soon formed what would become  DCTV. Both Lola G. and James Greer are multi-instrumentalists. Lola G  sings in French on the duo’s latest album confusion moderne which is out now. The result is a combo of fuzzy garage band rock/ French pop/ 60s ephemera/ fuzzy arrangements. There’s even a cover of “L’Accord Parfait” from one of my favorite 90s bands Autour de Lucie.

should be a fabulous live show.
