new music: Perfume Genius
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on October 23, 2019
“Pop Song” is the bright, ethereal, lush new Perfume Genius song from The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance and music performance collaboration with Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallichof. The Sun Still Burns Here is commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and created, in part, with the support of The Joyce Theater Foundation’s Artist Residency Center. Perfume Genius is the stage name of Seattle-based musician Mike Hadreas. About “Pop Song,” Hadreas said: “I imagined an ecstatic pile of bodies preparing to be consumed by the gods. A joyous communal sacrifice of the physical to spiritually level up. The lyric is like a conjuration spell to be sung when the mountain of bodies settles in position and is held still as an offering.”
THE SUN STILL BURNS HERE – PERFORMANCE DATES:
November 13 -17, The Joyce Theater, New York City (tickets)
December 5 – 7, Liquid Music X Walker Art Center, McGuire Theater, Minneapolis (tickets)
January 17 – 18, ICA Boston, Boston (tickets)

“Border Country” is the second collaboration with friend of Underworld and DRIFT community member Ø [Phase]. It’s the final part of DRIFT Episode 4 and will be available on all DSPs July 4. Their upcoming album Drift Songs will be out October 25, 2019. It will be Underworld’s first album release since 2016’s Grammy nominated LP Barbara, Barbara we face a shining future.
Rick Smith said: “My relationship with Ashley a.k.a Ø [PHASE] began in Autumn 2017 when I first heard his Submerged Metropolitan release.. it’s not an exaggeration to say I immediately fell in love with his music. There was a sense of journey and mystery and magic to what I heard. Having worked with him for a little while we know he brings that same magic to the table every time, informed by his deep passion and understanding of the lineage of Techno and a thirst to learn and grow. A lovely talented man.”

based in Portland, Maine, Jaw Gems creates dance trance beats and grooves with a soothing, hypnotic vibe. On its Facebook page the group describes its genre as drip hop / ratchet jazz. Fitting. Formed in 2009, the experimental music collective started out with vintage synthesizers, a drummer, and an electric bassist and more recently [for those EDM-philes out there] added in Roland sp404 and the Juno 106 Analog Synth. New album Heatweaver [1320 Records] out now.

show preview: HAELOS at Middle East Club in Cambridge on Friday April 1, 2016
Posted by Amy Steele in Music on March 30, 2016
“It’s the music you put on after the club,” Lotti Benardout states. “You can still feel that energy and euphoria, but it might bring you back to reflect on certain moments or memories.”
The impressive London-based electronic indie trio HAELOS recently released its debut album Full Circle [Matador Records]. Pounding bass beats combine with shimmery atmospheric arrangements. There’s intense sorrow, regret, beauty, moodiness, darkness and strength in the lyrics and melodies. Benardout’s vocals range from dreamy [“Ethyr”] to whispery to sweetly gentle [“Dust”] to plaintive [“Earth Not Above”]. She shares vocals on some songs with principle songwriter Arthur Delaney and Dom Goldsmith. It’s impossible not to become completely engulfed and drawn in by this striking music. Imagine the magic of full immersion in this music during a show. The band’s on tour now.
HAELOS plays The Middle East Club in Cambridge on Friday, April 1, 2016.
