St. Lucia definitely orbits electronica vibes in its songs and that’s cool. Modernistic. Gorgeous textures. Exuberant beats. Particularly “Before the Dive.” Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, now based in Brooklyn, New York, Jean-Philip Grobler is St. Lucia. Jean-Philip grew up performing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. When the choir wasn’t touring [they performed in Japan, Australia, Europe, the US and more] they stayed in an enclave in the South African mountains where they learned a range of music from Bach and minimalist opera to African War Songs and Celine Dion. Radiohead’s OK Computer album influenced Jean-Philip to move to Liverpool, England to study music.
The “September” EP [Neon Gold Records] features my favorite mixes the trance dance Leo Zero Remix and the dub beat Punks Jump Up Funhouse Remix. Although years at X Night and being a Liquid Todd fan never made me a Club Kid. I’ll get a headache if I listen to remixes too loud and too long.
