Elbow: music review

Build a Rocket Boys! is the fifth release from popular Manchester UK band Elbow. Manchester should make you think of raves and whistles and bells and techno-infused music. Instead, this band is so understated that its simplicity is its charm. Guy Garvey (vocals, guitar), Mark Potter (guitar, vocals), Pete Turner (bass), Craig Potter (keyboards) and Richard Jupp (drums) formed Elbow in 1990 while in sixth-form college. Elbow masters that murky, darkly enthralling sound. The longing title track soothes with its visceral vocals. “Neat Little Rows” grooves with an intense bass riff. Vocals on “With Love” sound a bit like my ex-boyfriend who sang for Boston-band The Gravel Pit but he was a great crooner so I’m getting used to it. While the melody picks up on “Open Arms,” the drama-free attitude proves an ultimately relaxing tune. If you like Athlete, you’re bound to like Elbow.
