Hopkins: Great show and great quote

July 17, 2008

There’s a great show on that follows a bunch of residents at Hopkins. It’s called Hopkins and is on ABC on Thursdays.

Am I getting too cranky? I really am. This is usually when I get in trouble and two days from now I’ll be sitting on Dr. Conte’s couch and he’ll go, “Avo, you can’t call people stupid. I don’t like doing eight times what should be done right the first time.

I got my Season One DVD in the mail from Amazon a few days ago and I want to watch it all over again. It’s SO brilliantly fantastic.

Great Quote: Persepolis

you’ll meet a lot of jerks in your life.
if they hurt you, remember it’s because they’re stupid.
don’t react to their cruelty.
there’s nothing worse than bitterness and revenge.
keep your dignity and be true to yourself

Transsiberian: Film Review

July 14, 2008

Kill off all my demons Roy and my angels might die too.

Written and directed by Brad Anderson (Next Stop Wonderland), Transsiberian is a fantastic thriller in an unusual setting–the Transsiberian railroad. Interestingly, after the film’s screening at the 2008 Boston Independent Film Festival a few months ago, Anderson revealed that he studied Russian and Russian history in college and had traveled on the railroad in the 80s.

Jess (Emily Mortimer) and Roy (Woody Harrelson) are doing volunteer work in China at the beginning of the film. Deciding they need an adventure, they decide to take the Transsiberian from China to Moscow. The trip turns out to be more of a nightmare than an adventure when their paths cross with drug dealers. Ben Kingsley is creepy in his enigmatic role, though I feel it’s one I’ve seen him do before. Mortimer does an impressive job as the American traveler in the midst of some major drama. Woody Harrelson, as the geeky husband, fits perfectly in this thriller with twists and turns aplenty. He can play almost any type and make it work, make it real, make it believable. Much of Harrelson’s work gets over-looked I believe, especially his indie roles. I loved him in one of my favorite films, Welcome to Sarajevo.

Anderson also weaves in beautiful shots of the snowy never-ending woods and train stations. Trains make wonderful setting for thrillers. It’s moving for one thing. Once you get on, you cannot get off until the next stop. All types of people utilize this type of travel for various reasons: sightseeing, budget, a leisurely trip. While Transsiberian lagged a few times, this smart film is well worth the trip to the theater.

STEELE SAYS: SEE IT!

Californication

July 1, 2008

I’m loving this show. Of course I don’t get Showtime or HBO so I have to watch anything when it comes out on DVD.

David Duchovny (who I loved in X-Files and I just loved X-Files period) is sexy, raw and supremely beguiling. Well-written and so accurate about writing, writers and Hollywood.

Hank: Invite me over. I will cook for you.

Karen: Cook. you?

Hank: I have my one dish.

Hank: Not the Cheese Sensation.

Hank: Cheese Sensation. Yes, five different kinds of cheeses including cream cheese, the people’s cheese. Don’t knock the haute cuisine of Long Island.
